AVG Questions

1) AVG Free is going to be discontinued for we Luddites that have clung to W98SE (even if we have only clung to it as a fall-back). Is there still a comparable programme available?

2) Another question is this:- Since the more modern OSs run NTFS, as opposed to the olde worlde FAT32, are the older ones safer from attack than the new ones? I appreciate that W98 users are getting to be as rare as hens teeth, and therefore are no longer worthy prime targets, but are viri generally backward compatible?

Short answer: No.

A Virus is not written for a specific filesystem, rather an OS. Meaning any filesystem used can still run a win32 application (exe). The file system just stores it in a different way.

The only real difference between FAT32 and NTFS is the allocation table. Rather than storing a seperate entry for every file (fat32), NTFS can store all files in one table.

Here's some more information: http://www.ntfs.com/ntfs_vs_fat.htm

AVG Free version 7.5 (the new one) will work on W98SE.

Get it here.

Yeah I have it on my 98 machine that I used when this one was down.

Thank dadyassa. Nice to know there is no problem. When I followed the link thrown up by the auto update option the AVG site, the site told me that what I was trying to download was not suitable. I shall have another try.

I downloaded it HERE and followed the instructions and did a repair option as they suggested.

It took a while to download, I think it downloaded the whole program then just overwrote it and changed a few files to the new version.
