Media Center Edition is an upgrade for Windows XP Professional. It will not run on XP Home. You can also get a stand-alone version which will run on its own without isntalling XP first.

Thanks scarecrow man, I was having trouble installing it. Thought I needed to do a clean installation of windows. Will that let me watch videos off my hard drive also?

I can watch videos on my XP systems - home and professional. You don't need MCE to do this, just the right codecs and Windows Media Player or independent DVD playing software such as WinDVD. (or have I misunderstood what you are trying to do?)
