JesseJ1935
A few days ago I had to do a reinstall of XP, with SP2. All was well right up to when I switched off last night. Come to start up this morning and up comes the box to type in my password, which I don't have, before I can click on OK though up pops another little box with the message > Log on message. Unable to log you on because of an account restriction<.I tried to boot from the Windows CD, that did not do any good, though I must have hit set up at some time while I was going through the various options, as I ended up with the following message > A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer. BAD_POOL_CALLER. Tech Info. ***STOP: 0x000000C2 (0x00000007, 0x00000CD4, 0x00340045, 0xE146838C). And thats as far as I can get.I tried booting into Safe Mode, tried every option on the screen from Safe Mode to Last known good configuration. In Safe Mode I get the message >Windows XP Set Up cannot run under Safe Mode. Set Up will restart now< and goes on to tell me to put the CD in the drive, shortly after doing so I get the blue screen with the same message as above, i.e. A problem has been detected, etc. Please, please help somebody before I go bald tearing my hair out.I shall, of course, come back to the message board to see if there are any replies as I am on daughter's laptop. My other computer will not connect for reasons unknown, but that can wait.
Alan2273
An 0x02 error is normally down to bad memory or a device driver clash. If you have more than one stick of memory in try them one at a time, if not see if you can borrow some that you know is working. JesseJ1935
Thank you alan, I fitted a new Crucial 1GB RAM only about 3 weeks ago, I'll change it back to the old ones and see what happens. As to maybe a problem with drivers, I can't do much about that seeing as I cannot get into Windows. I've even tried to go back to square one and do a fresh reinstall, I can't, it comes up with a message that Windows has detected a problem and will close to prevent damage to the computer. Scarecrow Man
I think trying to reinstall windows has made the problem worse. You can try to follow these following guides to see if the old Windows is recoverable.http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/repair_...lation_xp.shtmlhttp://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=15213
JesseJ1935
I'm inclined to agree with you that I've made things worse. OK, many thanks for your reply, I will give me something to work at tomorrow, too late tonight I think. I'll report back when I'm done, thanks again. cozofdeath
Unable to log you on because of an account restrictionThis may be because you didn't set up any user accounts other than the default built-in administrator after you installation. Are you trying to log on as the administrator and did you set up any other user accounts? Also if this is the problem it will most likely have to be fixed before troubleshooting stop error. JesseJ1935
That could well be it, I didn't give that a thought. Before doing the reinstall there was an Administrator account; one in my name, and another for a guest. Now there is only the one, Administrator account, nothing else. So the great big question now is, how the heck do I get round that? If I can't get past the Log On box then I can't change anything, or can I? JesseJ1935
In addition to my last post.It has been suggested that the problem could well be either the RAM contacts were dirty, or with the graphics card.I have taken the RAM out, cleaned it though it was new only 2 or 3 weeks ago, but instead of putting the new 1GB back, I put in the old 2 x 256MB sticks. Couldn't do much about the graphics as it is onboard, VIA/S3G. Connected the computer up and first off got a message on the monitor that there was no signal, this was followed my a distinct smell of burning so I very swiftly switched off. Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions a bit too fast but after going round the innards I was unable to find anything even remotely warm, so my guess is the graphics is up the spout. If so, this could possibly create another small problem, there is not a spare PCI slot unless I remove the old dial up modem card. Seeing as I am on broadband I can't see that there is any need for it to be in the computer anymore. If I go down this route and put in a graphics card will I need to do anything in BIOS? Assuming that is that I can get into BIOS.
cozofdeath
Heres a link if you need more info on the "Unable to log you on because of an account restriction".http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290109Did you finish your installation? Without being able to enter you Windows cd or safe mode you can't really do anything unless you have a live cd or maybe a floppy.
JesseJ1935
Hi cozofdeath, thank you for your reply. The reinstall was successful and I was busy getting things back to the way I wanted, it was working during the evening but when I tried to start up the following morning I was met with the Log On box, swiftly followed by another box telling me the account was restricted and wouldn't let me go any further. Getting carried away, after I had tried everything else I could think of, I decided to go back to square one and do a fresh reinstall. Wrong. It got part way through and the up came the dark blue screen telling me that it had detected a problem and would now close. So that idea is out of the window, and I don't know where to go from here. I don't know if it will be any good, but it might get me into the system, I have 3 Linux OS's and an XP Pro CD that has never been used simply because I have never got around to upgarding to Pro, mainly bacause I put the CD away after being given it and forgot about it.Another problem has reared its ugly head this morning, after following various suggestions I removed the RAM and cleaned the contacts, but instead of putting that one back in, I put in the 2 x 256M RAM sticks that I had been using before getting he 1GB stick. Connected everything up and switched on. First was a messaage on the screen saying there was no signal, then came the smell of burning so I very swiftly switched off. To me that suggests that the graphics has gone belly up, unless somebody knows different. Just to help matters, it is on board. The motherboard is an ASUS A7V8X-MX BTW. I'm really stuck now, don't know whicch way to go for the best, maybe go out and buy a new computer?
JesseJ1935
Another idea has occured to me, with all these ideas I keep getting maybe I should give up having them, is there a way to format the hard drive without having to use the XP CD? So I can make a completely fresh start on clean drive?
Scarecrow Man
You can format using a windows 98 boot disk. http://www.bootdisk.com/bootdisk.htmIt sounds like your having quite a few troubles with this computer. I dont understand the burning smell, but as for cleaning the ram, I believe what he wants you to do is use an eraser (like on the end of a pencil) and clean the contacts. They sometimes build up carbon, and the connection can cut out or not work at all. Using an eraser, is just like erasing a pencil mark. It should come right off if there is any.As for the rest of it, it might be time for a new computer. You could try buying just a motherboard / processor and maybe a PSU because you already have new ram (just make sure its compatible) you already have a case and such, so just swap everything out. JesseJ1935
Many thanks scarcrowman.Using the boot disk is worth a try, I've nothing to lose afterall. I'm rather inclined to agree with you about the motherboard, pity, it's only 3 years old. I'll try the boot disk first though before I dash out to buy a new motherboard. My local, friendly computer shop said ore or less the same thing about it. No harm in hoping though.
JesseJ1935
Having carried out no end of tests suggested elsewhere, the conclusion has been reached the it is almost definitely the motherboard gone belly up.Never mind, nothing lasts for ever, though being only 3 years old I would have expected a bit longer. Many thanks to all who replied.
