Manly5000
Hey all,I was wondering what this might be. I've heard this on multiple computers with different versions of Windows, but am currently on Windows XP Pro. Every now and then I'll be doing whatever on my system, when all of the sudden I'll hear a faint "chop" or "scratch" type of sound that plays twice in a row with a couple second delay between them. It sort of sounds like "Chik-a.......chik". It almost sounds like something you'd hear when emptying the recycling bin, but happens randomly. Sometimes I'll go for days without hearing it, and other times (like right now) it does this once every few minutes for a while.Anyone know what it is?Thanks! -pops-
I assume this is coming from the speakers and not from anything else in your computer.I had a problem with some software provided by my ISP (I think in association with Yahoo) which, every so often made a clicking noise, perhaps similar to the one you describe. Initially I disabled the sound but, after a while, the software itself irritated my so I removed that as well.To check Windows sounds go to Control Panel -> Sounds and Audio Devices then click on the Sounds tab which comes up. You will need to go through the list checking each sound in turn. To do this click in the sound in the Program Events box and the click on the "go" arrow to the right of the Sounds box towards the bottom. When you come across the sound which is causing the problem, click on the down arrow on the sounds box and select "None". This will disable the sound for that particular action.Hope you can follow that. It seems much more complex than it really is in practice. catgate
How about something like an antivirus checker on "automatic pilot" running from the system tray.
andsome
I am using my daughters computer at present as we are visiting today. For some time now it has been giving a series of clicking noises now and then, even if all the normal sounds are inacctivated.
-pops-
Clicking from inside the computer case is ominous and may be an indication of a failing hard drive.Ensure that everything is backed up (which it should be anyway). In any case, it's no good telling my daughter about anything, she takes no notice. I once found nine viruses on her crap top, luckily they must have been fairly inoccuous ones.
