I'm ecstatic. I have now been on line for a full half hour without it shutting down on me.

Our telephone is still off line, and has been for the last 9 days, but we still can just occationally get a bit of broadband. They were supposed to come and start digging just a bit further up the road on Monday, but we have seen nothing of them yet.

A neighbour, outside whose farm drive they are supposed to be digging, was over here a couple of days ago and told us whenever the ditch at the side of the road gets over half full his phone always goes off. Apparently the underground 'phone cable crosses the ditch at the half full level, and as soon as it gets submerged ....pop.

You would have expected with the technology at the disposal of the GPO (sorry...... BT) it would not be beyond the wit of a good engineer to devise a means of keeping the water out of the works.

I just hope when I push the GO button we will still be on line and this rubbish gets through.

Many, many years ago my grandmother lived in a fairly remote part of Nottinghamshire. Whenever there was dry weather for more than a couple of weeks her phone would stop working.

After much investigation by the GPO (yes, it was them then) they discovered an earthing rod outside the house without which the phone didn't work. The "without which" included a good contact of the rod with the actual earth.

The remedy was when the phone didn't work, she had to go outside with a watering can and water the earthing rod.

So, problem just the opposite of yours, catgate.

Managed to get back on bb this morning but still no 'phone.

I am still puzzled by the fact that we can ger (occasionally) broadband but no phone. Two BT engineers have told me that "you only need one wire for Broadband". It looks as though the circuit must be completed via the mains earth inside the PSU.

Any thoughts???
