nellie2
Security is sooooooo boring, and it is such a pain in the bum making sure I've got an up to date anti virus and configuring my firewall etc... Why should I bother?Good Question
cozofdeath
It seems like a good answer to the question. An uncommon answer also. This has been around before the "zombie" intrusions were heard of though. At least as far as I know people have been doing this for as long as exploits have been around. I remember reading The Fugitive Game by Jonathan Littman and reading how hacker Kevin Mitnick had massive amounts of stolen software on an internet service providers server. I believe it was a couple hundred Megs, but at the time it was an extraordinary amount of data. And all highly confidential stuff. I'm sure by todays standards its easily to massively control many pcs almost like a remote database. I've heard some of the people that control these botnets, simply connect to an IRC channel and issue commands or scripts to do what ever they want to these pcs. cozofdeath
DDoS is usually how they threaten or show their power of bandwidth. I've read stories of hackers blackmailing websites (specifically commercial) to give them money otherwise no visitors for xx amount of days. Thats pretty messed up especially when its root servers or all of the data is completely spoofed. Which is very possible even in xp. Source and destination can be spoofed, so the attacker is sending large amounts of packets not expecting them to return and the source is getting slammed with them and trying to wait and reply. This leads to other attacks like LanDs which effects or used to effect a lot of home dsl/routers (not to mention XP, 2003 ). Its funny because this attack came out in the 90s but resurfaced when MS seemed to forget about it. Probably because they tried to eliminate raw sockets use from users but failed. Some ISPs block this, its to bad they can't block DDoSs.
andsome
All very interesting folks. I try to be as careful as I can. I run at least one scan every day with one or another of my AV or Anti Malware programs. Everything is always as up to date as possible. It really is a lot less bother, and a lot less boring to spend a few minutes doing this, than to spend hours putting everything right again. It's a bit like have a daily shower, you never really get grubby, and what bit of muck there is, is easily removed.

It costs me nothing and I can carry on with what I'm doing. Much better safe than sorry. I would rather be over cautious than not cautious enough. I also run Crap Cleaner once per day. Irene
I have AVG scheduled to update and run each day at 8:00am, or whenever I boot up if it's not on at that time. It runs in the background and I don't notice it.Windows Defender updates and runs at 18:00hrs each day. I know some members don't think it does anything, but I do it anyway. B) SpywareBlaster, I hope, resides there in real time and blocks anything unwanted.ZoneAlarm operates my personal firewall. Then I run CCleaner frequently, but not every day.Hopefully, this is sufficient. :D
