Since past two days my computer is running relatively very slow and when I try to access Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt-Del the Task Manager button is shown as inactive (greyed). Coreper Posted March 15, 2007 Report Share Posted March 15, 2007 try this:open your registry, navigate to: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System edit: DisableTaskMgr [REG_DWORD] to 0 >> 1=Enable this key, that is DISABLE TaskManager and 0=Disable this key, that is Don't Disable/Enable Task Manageror try this:Click Start > Run > gpedit.msc > OK > Group Policy settings window > Select User Configuration > Select Administrative Templates > Select System > Select Ctrl+Alt+Delete options > Select Remove Task Manager > Double-click the Remove Task Manager option > Disable it [Disables the removal!=enable Task Manager]btw: i suggest that you ask a moderator to remove your email adress [or change it to leathergoods[at]jafferjees[dot]com], for security reasons Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Idrees Adam Posted March 16, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 16, 2007 Thank you so much for your Help!First I tried going to registry but when I type "regedit" in Run window nothing happened. Then I tried Group Policy Settins option, it worked and I could now see "Task Manager" button active when I press Ctrl+Alt-Del, but the problem is when I click on it, the Task Manager window appears just for a fraction of a second and vanishes like a flash!!I have McAfee antivirus installed on my system. I did a complete scan, also tried McAfee Stinger but nothing suspicious was found. My system is still running too slow and Task Manager is still not accessible.Do you have any other suggestions please? Idrees Adam Posted March 19, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 19, 2007 Thanks to all those helping me :)Before I could try anything suggested, here's what I found out. It just happened that I had to move some data from my PC to another computer running Windows 98 through a USB Flash Drive. After copying data I noticed a "New Folder" named Application on the USB drive having an icon similar to a folder. However it wasn't a folder at all, it was an application. Another thing that happened was after copying data on Win 98 computer when I restarted the system it brought up the dial-up window. Luckily I was able to see running processes on this Win 98 machine by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del. I noticed a process named rvhost.exe for which I found the following info on Symantec site:http://www.symantec.com/security_response/...-99&tabid=2I was able to clean the Win98 system successfully but am still stuck with my registry editing on XP SP2. When I type "regedit" in run window it doesn't do anything?!?I also tried installing "UnHookExec.inf" as mentioned on Symantec site but didn't work either. Just HELP me how do I access regedit. -pops- Posted March 19, 2007 Report Share Posted March 19, 2007 Have you tried doing a System Restore to a time before this happened?Also, for the future and especially if you have anything of any value whatever on your computers, prepare a full system backup (and keep it up to date). Idrees Adam Posted March 20, 2007 Author Report Share Posted March 20, 2007 As per my findings it wasn't a Virus but a worm. System Restore was a great idea, but not for my pc as I had already turned it off following removal instructions from Symantec site. I did system restore on another pc on our network which was also infected by rvhost.exe and it really worked.For my pc I had to go a long way using a combination of Ad Aware SE and RegRun Reanimator. I found both these softwares very useful and finaly I got rid of the nasty rvhost.exe worm!!Thanks to everybody who helped me, I really appreciate it.
