2nd Hard Drive Not Recognised

Recommended Posts

I really don't know what happened here - - -was / am running completely blind with that utility.

Is it all really over ???

Can I come home of a night a put me feet up for a while now ??

can I stop badgering you all ????

One final question - - - - looking at that last screen-shot, do you think its stable, or should I back it up and fdisk it ???

Will 'wind' this up tomorrow when I find a list of all the people I need to thank here, though Mr M , Boris and ellas are top of the list for sure

TBH1, am I glad you seem to have got it back! :D :P

If I were you, I would DEFINITELY get all the data safely checked and backed up, then erase the drive and start afresh. I trust that in future you will always have multiple backups on different media.

I will still stick the stuff I promised you in the post. B)

Best Wishes. Mr. Mouse.

Mr M - - - I still can't believe it - -in fact, I think I'm dreamin' !! :D

I will read up on that utility - I was put onto that when I requested help on PCA for my "write errors" - - - - still can't figure out how to use it.

I can't thank you enough for your perseverance ( how do you spell that ??).

A big thank you to everyone that took part in this 'discussion' - - - trouble is, if this happened to anyone else, would I remember how to solve it - - -

allas - - am just on the trial version - - -though the facilities even there look good - - -particularly the temperature monitors. A bit worried running it again after my mate Mr M saying that - - -waiting on the nod from hom :D

Will do one or two screen shots and post in a min.

PS - I love this forum

ellas - - -have gone all 'funny' now - - - -don't know what to say

I did wonder at those titles - - -thought I was seeing things when I was windows 3.1 - - -had to recheck my post to see if I had given any ' mis-information' - - then windows 95 - - another re-read - - -made up mate , over the moon, thought I'd set me stall out, make a big impression early doors - -- woops, going into Big Ron mode there for a minute. Now don't you go changing that before I can show me mates tomorow wil you ??

One thing, whats that 'warning' thingy ???? Must read the rules one day !!

Just a gentle wind up TBH1, you will find I can be quite partial to some obscure wind ups. Normally at Nellie's expense

Unless your drive is really knackered, diagnostic software should do no harm. <_<

Mr M - - -I have only seen your 'serious' side right now - - - - but will be aware, now, that that isn't the only one  I do know what your saying though - as a rule I never install trial versions of anything, well, hardly ever - - -and when I do, being a little paranoid ( who said that ???? ), I usually revert my system via GoBack - - - - - but I ain't got round to intalling that as Evesham, who I boughtPC from, are still on the case of my problems , well, 2 problems ago re write error thingy saying there may be a confliction between GoBack and Nortons Utilities - - - now considering these two programs have been working quite happily for the last 18 months - - -am waffling on a bit methinks so will stop :)

BTW - If it shows a WARNING - it doesn't necessarily mean anything.

Post back the results if you do get one - so I can have a look.

Just "Export Results" - it goes to a text file that you can attach below.

Phate - - - had already tried that - - -like most other things - - -managed to solve this, after a great deal of work by all people on this thread - - but in particularly one or two people who shall remain nameless, if it ain't already obvious by their input - - -and they do know who they are, and I am eternally grateful - - and they are on my Xmas Card list :D

To interpret what the Disk Checkup readings mean :-

SMART Attributes Meanings

There are several attribute classes. Some are drive life-critical, but some are not!

Following is a list of some attributes. Please note that it does not describe all possible attributes.

Attributes

ID (hex) Name

01 Read error rate

Indicates a rate at which read retries are requested.

Lower values indicate that there is a problem with either disk surface or read/write heads.

03 Spin Up Time

"Spin up time" describes amount of time it took to spin the platters up to their rated rotation speed.

Values above 80 should be considered good.

Values between 70 and 80 are still acceptable.

There is a known issue with Quantum (Maxtor) hard drives - out-of-the-box new drives drop "Spin up time" to 70 within first two weeks of use, causing program to predict failure within a month. This is usually a false alarm. After some initial "burn-in" period "Spin up time" becomes constant and the drive functions normally

04 Start/stop count

Raw value of this attribute indicates total number of drive start/stop cycles (including both power on/off switching and suspend/wakeup switching).

05 Reallocated sectors count

Indicates amount of spare sector pool available.

Spare sectors are used to replace sectors that became bad for some reason.

Value of 100 means that no sectors were remapped.

Value of 1 means that spare sectors are exhausted due to multiple remaps.

The raw value of this attribute shows exact amount of reallocated sectors.

07 Seek Error Rate

Average rate of seek errors. This attribute indicates a state of head positioning mechanism.

Lower values shows that there is a problem with head positioning.

09 Power on hours count

Raw value of this attribute indicates how long the drive was working (powered on).

0A Spin retry count

Indicates number of times disk was unable to spin platters up on first attempt (lower values mean more retries). The raw value indicates the amount of retries.

0B Recalibration retries

Indicates number of times recalibration was requested.

Low value (multiple recalibrations) usually indicates some head positioning problem.

C Power Cycle Count

Count of disk power cycles. The raw value indicates amount of power cycles.

C2 Temperature

This attribute shows temperature for drives equipped with thermal sensor.

C5 Current Pending Sector Count

Amount of pending sectors. If the sector issues an error during read or write the drive marks it as pending for a certain time before replacing this error sector with a spare one.

C6 Offline Scan Incorrect. Sector Count

Amount of error sectors detected during the last off-line scan.

C7 Ultra ATA CRC Error Count

UDMA controller performs an error checking on data it receives from HDD, ensuring that data was not damaged while transmitted over the cable.

Each time the error is detected, controller requests a retransmission, thus slowing down the overall transfer speed.

Lower values of "Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate" correspond to higher number of errors, usually indicating a cabling problem.

C8 Write error count

Indicates a rate at which write retries are requested.

Lower values indicate that there is a problem with either disk surface or read/write heads.

The raw value indicates amount of write errors.
