Pig
Hello - can anyone help. I have Windows XP on a stand alone computer, but with 3 different users able to use it. For the last two days, every time we leave the computer inactive for any amount of time it keeps logging off the user and taking us back to the user log on screen, losing all our open pages, documents, etc. We haven't got it set to do this, and screensaver isn't programmed to come on, so why has it started doing it. Is there a virus that causes this sort of thing. I have run McAfee virus scanner but it isn't picking anything up, and anyway, as it takes so long to run through all the data the computer is logging us off this as well! Can anyone help at all? Raddy
Depending on the frequency (if it has happened more than two or three times, this is scenario is unlikely) but Windows update sometimes has a nasty habit of rebooting your computer following an update if you're not there to tell it to wait to reboot. Pig
Hello again. No I have not installed any programmes, there is only me and my husband use the computer and we haven't done anything (knowingly) to it. The computer logs itself down every time we leave the computer alone, even for 5 minutes to go and make a cup of coffee - if we are using it it doesn't happen. Could it be a virus that McAfee isn't picking up? Has anyone heard of a virus that does this that we might have got through an e-mail. It is driving us mad - particularly as the computer takes so long to log back on and all the programmes to reload.
nellie2
To be honest with you, I haven't heard of a virus or trojan that would do that... but you never know!!!You can download and scan with (for free) something like SuperAnti Spyware or AVG Anti Spyware and see what they come up with and if there is any improvement after running a scan
Boris
You could always try a System Restore back to a point before it started behaving strangely ?
