Redundant Registry Entries

This is not a significant problem but a quest to satisfy my curiosity.

I have Vista Ultimate installed and do regular system back-ups using Acronis. Before making each back-up I run Crap Cleaner.

Yesterday I uninstalled a programme named TaxCalc (having completed our annual tax returns) using the uninstall feature in Control Panel. Today I ran CCleaner and it found 18 TaxCalc registry entries left behind - so I asked CCleaner to remove them. I then left Acronis running whilst I had breakfast. When I returned to the computer I ran CCleaner again and to my surprise the same registry entries popped up again - so I deleted them. I ran CCleaner again and the same thing happened.

Curious, I ran Reg Seeker and it found 61 registry entries for TaxCalc - which I asked it to delete. Yet again I ran CrapCleaner and the same 18 registry entries for TaxCalc were found.

Now very confused I resorted to running Regedit - it found 11 registry entries for TaxCalc which I deleted. Upon running CCleaner again - all previous 18 entries were not found and the system looks clean - confirmed when I ran Reg Seeker yet again.

I have always pinned a lot of faith in Crap Cleaner and Reg Seeker but this incident has raised doubts.

Can anyone throw some light on the matter.....?

You may find that the Treasury has some sort of embargo on the removal of anything that might have a reducing effect on its thieving ways. :(

i have the complete explanation for your "problem":

CCleaner only searches and removes registry entries which are safe to remove, and which can be removed using YOUR permissions

RegSeeger searches and removes ALL invalid registry entries, ignoring ANY permissions: it removes any [invalid] registry even if it is used, or admin rights are needed: it overrides the "safety protocol"

using RegSeeker to remove those registry entries might have been a wrong decision..., because it removes all invalid entries

using CCleaner to remove them is much safer, because the method is completely secure

after using RegSeeker to remove entries, some programs might not work correct any more

i definitly recommend using CCleaner for the registry cleaning, CCleaner is a good registry scanner which removes a lot of errors

another good registry cleaner is, not free though, the registry cleaner from TuneUp Utilities 2007

Thanks for the info - but you have raised a question.

I asked Reg seeker to remove all the redundant entries - but CCleaner then found the original 18 it found before. This indicates that Reg Seeker did not do a thorough job. Then to compound my confusion, regedit managed to clean things up. It has restored my belief in Bill Gates, systems

Never had any problem with CC. Maybe it does not like Vista.
