mcb2001 Posted July 21, 2007 Report Share Posted July 21, 2007 Well, to be honest, i wouldn't mind you buying any of those routers, but have you checked for "open-source" firmware for em, since you can buy a standard router (common one) and just upgrade the firmware, and thereby getting a superb 200£ router for 50£...The only guide i know about at the moment for this issue, is a danish one, so can't help you much, but can say so much, that its easy, cheap and safe! Well, i can try and clearify it:A router has an internal "operating system", which is upgradeable.This is called a "firmware upgrade" and is usually not something most people do, since they just dont know its available.The company originally producing the router usually has a firmware upgrade available on their webpage, including instructions on how to update your router.BUT (here is my point):There is open source alternatives available to a lot of, common used, routers firmware.You install it in exactly the same way as you do with the normal firmware. The only difference is that you get alot of new features and usually a faster router.So if you have the currage to install open source firmware, and do some research before bying, you can have a superb router, for the price of a cheaper... I dabble with bits in the PC, so there is no shortage of courage. However, I always, always, make backups so that when something goes wrong I can return to a good point. And I've done that often You cannot do that when you've mucked up yer router with someone else's open source firmware.
