I've been offline all evening due to severe electrical storms in the area.

Remember that thunder (or more correctly lightning) can easily devastate your computer setup - that includes your modem.

Remember to shut down and, importantly physically disconnect from the mains and from telephone lines when there are storms in your vicinity.

Don't rely on surge protectors, it isn't their function to protect lightning strikes, despite what they would have you believe in their advertising.

Whenever there is a storm in my area, I can almost guarantee that someone local to me will come complaining that their computer doesn't work any longer. I even had one person say his BB modem went off with a bang and a cloud of smoke.

why not use a ups instead of surge protector. they are way more relyable then cheap surge protectors.... aka, power stips.
