maengdei Posted August 18, 2007 Report Share Posted August 18, 2007 This poblem never existed before I upgraded from Windows 98SE to Windows XP. I do leave my computer on at all times but when I restart there is a few moments of "hum" through the speakers. Every incoming phone call rings the phone twice then tries to connect to the internet. I have removed my normal internet connection software and it still happens (nothing is supposed to be connected, but I do have the Microsoft automatic downloads turned on, not sure that matters). Actually not having the phone ring is a blessing for me but the wife don't like it. I did look through the troubleshooter, no luck. Also checked what I could understand in the connections area. By far the largest number of complaints on here some time ago were from upgrades. A similar thing has happened with Vista. Some on here have successfully upgraded, but have usually also had to upgrade hardware. I am one of the school who believes in only changing operating system, when you change the computer. The choice is up to the individual. Have you ever checked on the power consumption of your computer, and done a calculation of the running costs? -pops- Posted August 18, 2007 Report Share Posted August 18, 2007 Assuming the phone line is connected to the computer via a dial-up modem, it seems that you have some kind of FAX software installed which is intercepting calls after two rings. If you do have FAX software (Windows own or independent) disable it if you are not using it.Try ringing your number from a different phone. I was given a Fax/printer that I did try using briefly (didn't feel like buying the ink) and it isn't hooked up. But that sounds like what's happening, I did not uninstall it. All hardware checked out as working properly when I did the upgrade according to both the Windows site and the program that is with the computer. Now some software had to be played with and others that weren't installed don't want to cooperate but those are "fiddle" problems for me to squeeze my brain with, lol. I'm not sure exactly what you're alluding too on power consumption, but it really seems minimal compared to the AC/microwave/hair dryer-curler type things that are commonly on in my home. I have had this computer for 10 years and it is always in "on" status. I guess I am wasting energy though.What about a missing filter ?And just what type filter for what use? -pops- Posted August 18, 2007 Report Share Posted August 18, 2007 I think the filter that catgate means is a high frequency filter used on line with an ADSL connection. I don't think that's the problem here.To check for FAX software, click on Start then Printers and Faxes. You will then get a display of all printers and FAX software installed on that machine.If you don't want any FAX capability, highlight the "device" and click Delete this printer - although it is not a printer as we know it, the driver software behaves as such. I removed the fax/printer sometime in the past, it may have been before upgrading but I just can't recall. I did try using the Microsoft program Quicklink in the past also...maybe that's it. maengdei Posted August 19, 2007 Author Report Share Posted August 19, 2007 Not knowing what is causing this I am trying to "find" possible causes. I started with removing my ISP program long enough to see if the effect still happens, troubleshooting hillbilly style. It still tries connecting. I also have removed 3 telephony programs I've never used, still hear the modem action (even from the outside caller phone). I'm not sure if the sound is for Fax or not, sounds like the normal modem sounds to me. For some time I have been unhooking the line so normal phone use is possible when it rings. I could just get a switch and shut it off when not in use but ya know the drill, we (me) love(s) fiddlin with stuff. Maybe I should look for an upgraded driver file for the modem?
