K7S5A M/B is on the way out?

My M/B is an Elite K7S5A Ver 3.1a running an AMD Athlon XP processor. I have been having odd problems form time to time but now they are becoming more persistent. I have problems with the date and time and am replacing the battery quite often - replaced it only last week and have had the problem twice since resulting in error messages about AVG being out of date and Windows validation problems. Now it wont read my floppy drive, which was irritating while trying to do a re-install on a friends Win98 PC. Luckily I was able to get round this by using a USB memory stick.

I've tried re-seating the ribbon cable and also a spare. In addition a brand new floppy doesn't work. Are there any suggestions?

Been doing a search and there only seem to be secondhand M/B's available for the AMD will get one if necessary but would prefer one with some form of warranty. The PC does everything I want and don't really want to go into a massive replacement - I've had enough domestic equipment breaking down and having to be replaced this last month - freezer went last Fri.

My present set up is as follows:-

2 x 512 DDR memory sticks

1 x 4 port USB card

Verto 64 MB AGP graphics card

Ethernet card

1 x 40 GB HDD for the operating system

1 x 300 GB HDD for data

1 x CDRW

1 x DVDRW

Any suggestions please.

How about contacting the manufacturer, doug?

I had an ancient (ergo unobtainable) Asus board die on me. I contacted Asus UK and, after a few weeks, they sent me a replacement. I think it may have been second hand but at £5 it didn't matter that much. As far as I know, it's still working after several years.

doug,

Not sure what speed of CPU and RAM you have, or the AGP speed of your Verto, but how about this ?

Takes PC2100, PC2700 DDR + AGP 8x (1.5V)

Full spec of it :-

I'm not sure of the speed of the Verto either having lost the manual. It's a GeForce FX5200. I note in the guidelines for this board that you should only use a 1.5 V card or you will cause damage! The CPU is and AMD Thunderbird - I think 2.2 GHz.

Hmmmm .... your existing board

seems to be AGP 4x ???

but both the PNY Verto FX5200 256MB

and PNY Verto FX5200 64MB

appear to be AGP 8x ???

Yep the M/B is listed as a 4x AGP but can't find the manual for the Verto - got to be around somewhere, had a bit of a clear out recently. Anyway it seems to be working OK but presumably not at it's full capability. However I can't seem to find any references to the voltages. I'll be getting hold of the Asrock K7S41GX on return from holiday. Off this Wednesday for a couple of weeks so will be placing order then provided the voltage question isn't a problem. As a side note had check sum error on boot up this morning. For the last few days I've been booting up by booting into BIOS first checking date/tims and frequency, then re-booting. Bit of a faff on!

Just on the off-chance, doug, there isn't anything shorting out the BIOS rest jumpers/switch is there?

Seems odd that you are changing batteries often and getting checksum errors that it may just be the jumper wrongly positioned or there is something (bit of wire) shorting the pins out.

As I said, just an off chance but worth looking at.

Not even going to look at it pops. These problems have been getting worse quite steadily over the last 2-3 years. I'm sure something is dying, so have convinced myself and management that I need a replacement M/B. She suprised me in saying "isn't it time you bought a new one!" I'm well suited to my present set up and don't want to go into the depths of Vista and peripheral compatibility just yet. Still any info as to whether my graphics card will work satisfactorily in the proposed M/B would be gratefully received.

Have a look at your AGP card doug - and then compare it with what is shown here.

http://www.playtool.com/pages/agpcompat/agp.html

Look at the first 3 illustrations.

Each AGP card has one or two slots in its card edge.

If a video card has the 3.3 volt slot, then it can use 3.3 volt signaling.

AGP 2.0 added the 1.5 volt slot on cards which could use 1.5 volt signaling.

If the card has both slots then it can use both signaling voltages.

AGP 3.0 added support for 0.8 volt signaling but it did not add a new kind of slot.

If a video card supports either 1.5 volt or 0.8 volt signaling then it has the 1.5 volt slot.

Thanks for the info Boris, I'll have to persue things in a couple of weeks as there are a lot of other things before we go off on Wednesday I don't want to start taking the back off the PC before then. However, I have ordered one of those boards with No.2 Daughter's address for while we are away. If it turns out that I can't use my Verto board I'll use the onboard graphics out put. As I've got 1GB of memory it won't be a big issue. Expect I'll be asking lots of questions on returning from hols - boy do we both need a rest from G'child sitting. Must be getting old!
