Mike567
windows tells me that my hardware is failing, and that windows could not save the bunch of directory's on the drive.does this mean my directory's could have been deleted?I have at least 10gb's of music on it I don't want to loose. -pops-
No backup?Do one straight away.Be careful about powering down - you may find, like I did the other week, that it doesn't start again.
Mike567
when i booted up it came up with the error and has shown up in my computer.makes it hard to backup, shall i unplug HDD for now?i heard that freezing the HDD can allow you to boot it for a while.but from what i read it doesn't last long and moving 10gb's will take a long time. -pops-
I'm very surprised you don't have a backup, at least of your files if not the whole system.I can't comment on the freezing ploy. I've heard of it but not heard that it actually works. As to timing involved in making a copy or a backup, at least attempt to do something otherwise you are doomed to failure.Be aware, though, the Windows tends to err on the side of caution in these things - which is not to say you should ignore the warnings. Mike567
my other HDD's are full, this hdd is seperate from the system its just for music so it has been at the bottom of my list to backup.the freezing i recall putting it in the freezer for 24 hours someone got 20 mins out of it.I will try and boot knoppix tomorrow and see if i can access the drive and swap my music over to another harddrive i just found on my desk. Scarthy © ® ™
Backing up is all fair advise but how do you go on with 600+GB? Short of buying an external 500GB drive? I have heard about the freezer trick before and have an e-book on it if you want to have a look? I have uploaded it to Rapidshare for anyone who wants a copy. It's only 722kb in size and is in pdf format and rar'd up (no password on rar).LINK ---> > > > HERE < < < It's called 200 ways to revive a Hard Drive and freezing is one of them ! Hope it helps :);)

Scarecrow Man
The site escapes me now, but there was a page I remember seeing with annoying things in Windows. One of them was when a file error occurred and it could not copy the file. There was a program that did the trick of getting around that, but again I can't remember where I saw that. You know when you try to delete a file and it says "Windows cannot delete X. It is being used by another program"? ---> Prob not reading your post again, just trying to help... ;)

Mike567
I froze the HDD, ghosted it then to just test out it wasn't windows causing the problems i froze it for another 12 hours and used windows to copy the files over to a spare HDD.Just in case anyone is interested when freezing a HDD make sure to take all the air out of it which can be done using a food bag and a straw. redrocket
The tear and wear of hard disk causing hard disk failure is very usual and it always comes suddenly. Any method or suggestion that can solve such problem?
