Backup Drive - How to

Alright,

Drive A - Windows XP Pro (not 64) NTSF HD

Drive B - NTSF formatted HD, 2.5" connected via USB 2.0 using Vantec NexStar-3

I simply want to copy all files from drive A to Drive B. I have tried using windows copy/paste and I get I/O errors or invalid file name errors or an error stating that the file path was too deep. I tried a dos boot disk then copy, did not work. I tried using a Linux bootdisk "Knoppix" bootable disk to copy files. Did not work.

I made sure all permissions were set up correctly to allow read write (also in linux distro).

The entire reason I wanted to do this was to boot via USB from drive B, but I wanted to back it up, wipe it and install the OS.

I have also tried Sonic NOW burning software to create an ISO, but at 18 gigs, that was going to take FOREVER.

I am at the end of my rope so far. Last thing I tried was installing the new OS on the drive without removing any files, Windows 2000 Pro original distro told me that it could not write to the disk, however it was able to delete the old WINNT files (Drive B at once had a WINNT distro installed on it).

Im looking for a simple way to back up this drive. The only thing I can think of is a BIN to BIN file copy that ignores file structure and simply copies the entire drive verbatim. Not sure if such a thing exists or how long that would take.

Any help, thanks

Acronis will clone a drive - that is make an exact copy of the drive on to another one but, whether you will be able to boot from that new drive if it is connected via USB is by no means guaranteed.

The idea of cloning a drive is so that you are able to replace the old drive (from which you made the clone) with the new one.

If you don't want to invest in a professional backup tool such as Acronis, you can always use the Windows Backup tool (Start | Programs | Accessories | System Tools | Backup). This will create one compressed backup file, with all source files and directory structure intact. You can use Windows Restore to do a complete or selective restore.

Windows Backup worked wonders when I had some corrupt dll's and their locations resulting in missing Windows icons. Don't know if it will do a big job like CashGamma's though.

Those who use an imaging utility like Acronis, what advantage do you think it has over Windows Backup? I'd welcome your views.

The data I am trying to preserve is not the winNT OS. I am trying to back up my personal data first, clean the drive and install a fresh OS.

Booting from USB is not an issue, my laptop supports it and already tries to use the old corrupt 2kpro OS on the disk only to have a fatal failure halfway through.

All the problems I mentioned were during copy/paste functions using my personal pictures folders and audio files.

I will try windows backup and see how that works, I will let you guys know.

Thanks!

Yes, I tried both drag and drop and copy/paste. Effectively they both methods are executed the same way. I am going from the USB storage device to the internal HD.

Tried the back-up method through windows, seems it will take some time so I didnt go through with it, will wait until this evening before I hit the sack, let it run while im watching TV.

SUCCESS... oh no wait, no success. I looked at the log file, countless numbers of files that could not be read for

"....Warning: Unable to open "F:\P1000226.JPG" - skipped.

Reason: The specified network resource or device is no longer available."

However I can open the file directly from the run line command?

There were a few other entries I can overlook, but this is error is proliferant. Any ideas?
