USB plug in memory

Recommended Posts

At present I have a back up of my favourites folder, my address book and one or two other things stored on floppy disks. These are now getting quite old, so I am thinking of buying USB plug in memory. Any advice please on a good source of supply, size, price, reliability, use of etc. :D

I bought this one a couple of months ago and paid £15 for it. Just shows how much USB memory prices have tumbled recently. It works fine - no complaints.

That seems a better buy than several I have found from my own searches Alan. I have never used these devices before, do they need formatting, and if so are they NTFS? :D

I use these things a lot - so does my son. We got ours (Samsung) from 7day shop but those from Alan's link are even cheaper.

Very useful devices but WARNING WARNING always unplug by the correct "safely remove hardware" facility. These are very prone to dying on you if removed whilst they are doing something (which may not be apparent).

At risk of appearing "thick" I have to admit that I cannot remember whether I had to format it or not.

What I do know - is that memory sticks are normally formatted in FAT32.

If it is not formatted - it is easy to do - following a right click on it in Windows Explorer.

I don't use mine for long term backups - more for easy moving of data between computers - be it mine, managements or friends. In another post I described how I recently helped a couple of friends with computer problems. It was so convenient being able to take the memory stick with me loaded with a wide range of software and URL links that I may have needed during the exercise.

The memory stick I bought is not one of the high speed ones - this is reflected in the low price - but it is plenty fast enough for normal day to day use.

You can pay more than £20 for a 4 GB super high speed Sandisc one suitable for Vista as Ready Boost memory.

Thanks so far folks. I am not too bothered about speed, more important is a reasonable capacity. I am always careful when unplugging USB devices, namely my camera and printer. If no better offers come, I will buy one of those suggested by Alan. :D
