Emails and lexicography

A couple of weeks ago we changed ISP to BT. but until last night we had not tried to use anything. other than this Linux machine for email.

The Linux machine is connected via an ethernet connection to a wireless router, which is in turn connected to the 'phone by the usual DSL cable and filter.

Our other two machines, an aged laptop and a not so old tower are both on W98SE and are connected to the router via wireless cards.

All three are quite capable of touring the internet, and were capable of receiving and sending emails.

Last night management tried to send one using the lap top, but then realised that t'man had not changed the email settings. So t'man went to do so.

I tried again today with just as much luck, on both W98SE machines. On both I was getting the following message:-

The message could not be sent because the server rejected

the sender's e-mail address. The sender's e-mail address was

I was a little surprised because both had worked a couple of weeks ago and as far as I could see I was using the same account details which work happily in the Linux box.

I then got to questioning, yet again, just what "server" really means. So I Wiki -ied...with the following result:-

You had some sudden revelation? E.g. that the outgoing SMTP server may need userid and password? Did it work correctly after that? Congratulations

I eventually found that a little box, at the bottom of one panel, asking if authentication was required just needed a tick in it.

However the problem remains in my mind about what exactly is a server.

I suspect it was first used in computing by a woman. Along the lines of " "Server" means whatever I want it to mean.!"

Well, I am still having SERIOUS problems with Yahoo mail.

I am UNABLE TO SEND Yahoo POP3 mail. I have been sent on circuitous routes and changed every setting options in Email Settings. I do not want a web based access email, I wish to have access via Outlook!! Grrrrr

If possible, I do not wish to change my regular email, but if this continues I most certainly will!

So, if anyone knows of an alternative - reliable - free email service, I would be interested to hear about it.

No, I don't believe so. I have changed and unchanged both settings, as advised.

I think Yahoo are experiencing some serious problems.... But I don't need their problems. :(

Incoming messages are retrieved by POP3.

Outgoing messages are sent by SMTP, and sometimes requires authentication - userid and password.

Wherever you are trying to connect to, follow the setup instructions that the mail provider .. eeh .. provides. There shouldn't be any difficulties understanding the server name(s) used, and which boxes need to be checked, and which userids and passwords need to be supplied.

I have my Hotmail as an Outlook account - it's just like using a normal Pop3/SMTP account so far as creating, sending and downloading messages.

You have to use the subscription version of Hotmail for it to work - I think it costs about £6 per year.

I have had these Yahoo accounts for some years. Until recently they have worked perfectly well.

I use Outlook because I collect mails from more than one source, so I can retrieve them all at once in my Send/Receive operation.

As far as the outgoing and incoming server settings are concerned, I have checked and re-checked all the parameters and tick-boxes, until I feel I could reproduce them in my sleep!

This morning, I have accessed my Yahoo email account on the website and replied to an email sent from their "Customer Care".

I explained the exact situation to them, asking exactly what setting they want me to use. So it's now in the lap of the gods!!

Gmail - you can use it with Outlook, with POP/SMTP or IMAP access. Of course you can also use Firefox, and check webmail when you are traveling. Plus
