How do I change the way control panel looks. After an invasion by some viruses, the view I get in control panel is just of all the icons on a white background. How do I change it back to XP look, have tried all the settings I can think of but to no avail?

System restore back to when all was OK.......

Can't find restore option in menu's.

Ah, found restore but it won't. :( Ran restore but it says it cannot restore to previous point. It only shows 2 restore points, the oldest being April 6th and nothing prior to that. In fact I have only ever been able to succesfully restore once. That's why I've never really bothered before.

Chances are some system files have gone awry. Try this:

Start > run > sfc /scannow

and let it run through then reboot the computer.

Ran the above but it made no difference. In the end as I was going to install a new hard drive anyway so just did a new install.

Thanks for the info though.

Now with your new Windows installation - do you have anti-virus and anti-spyware installed, to prevent any future malware infestation?

... also a decent 2-way firewall to replace the limited 1-way Windows firwall. Plus I recommend WinPatrol FREE, to help protect against unauthorised changes to system files & what runs on your computer. You can get it here.

I'm giving Winpatrol a trial, but all this monitering can be a right pain when windows keep popping up all over the place to let you know such and such is trying to do something or other. Especially when the item in question has some obscure name and there's no way of telling whether it's malignant or a genuine piece of software trying to do it's job.

I'm using Windows firewall as well as relying on the ADSL routers built in firewall, Kapersky AVP anti-virus, Adaware, NX Nuker and now Winpatrol. If anything gets passed that lot I shall go back to playing Monopoly, pen and paper and teletext.
