Windows XP on SATA 160 GB with 512 MB DDR2 RAM

Hi,

I have been trying to install Windows XP SP2 from a bootable CD but for some reasons I havent been able to complete it.

Below you will find the system config followed by my queries:

New System

Processor: Intel Dual Core

Motherboard: Intel original 945 series

RAM: 512 MB DDR2

HDD: Seagate 160 GB SATA ( brand new)

CD ROM: LG

Floppy Drive: SONY

The issues:

1) When i insert the bootable Windows XP CD it takes a lot of time and returns with a error message "CDBOOT: Memory Overflow Error"

2) I brought my friends hard disk which has XP installed so that i could format my 160 GB hard disk but it does not go beyond the 'Operating system selection' page

3) When i select the mode i.e. Safe/Normal then it re-starts and takes me to the same page of operating system selection.

Anyidea how i can fix this issue ?

If using two sticks of memory, try it with each stick individually. You can also try memtest to test your memory modules.

A few looks over a google search show a few possible solutions:

1. The CD-ROM must be Secondary Master, not Primary Master.

2. The CD-ROM cannot boot CD's. Some cases show users unable to boot with a certain drive, but swapping the drive and all is well.

3. The CD-ROM may not be receiving adequate power. Make sure it has its own power that is not split with another device such as a fan.

If the motherboard is an older design, it may require independent SATA drivers to be loaded into the BIOS before it can be properly recognised. These used to be on a floppy disk supplied with the drive.

a few clarifications .. there is only one memory stick of 512mb and the board is a Intel 945 which does recognize the hard disk .. i get to see the specificaiton in BIOS .. so i guess i dont need drivers seperately ..right ??

as for the other options u have suggested then i guess i will try them .. will keep you posted on same .. just in case the issue still persist ..

Even if the drive is recognised as such by the BIOS, it still might not be seen by Windows.

It's a long time since I dealt with this but I recall that it was vital to write the SATA drivers to a floppy and adjust the BIOS with that before Windows could be loaded. It was this that put me off using SATA drives for a long time and I still don't like them.

Hi .. I somehow managed to proceed further and now i am getting this error:

Setup cannot install to the selected partition.

You can only install to GPT disks on IA-64 machines and MBR disks on X-86 machines.

You can only upgrade installations on GPT disks on IA-64 machines and MBR disks on X-86 machines.

Any suggestions ??

well i did go through this but the problem being that those friends of mine who have XP installed dont have the updated boards to support SATA hard disk so i cannot take it there as well ..

any other suggestions ??
