Almost free from *supporting* our kids. Our daughter accepted an offer from a large corporation this morning and will be flying to Atlanta, Georgia for 6 weeks of training. She graduated from The Ohio State University in December, '07 and has been looking for suitable full time employment since then. She has survived on wages earned by working as a waitress at a sports bar and grill near here. She has worked part time jobs since she was 15 years old and this is her first real job.

Our son is in the military.

No more car insurance, medical insurance, medical, housing, food, cell phone payments on our part.........she is on her own now, as is our son. We are still looking at the costs of weddings though.

It is a nice feeling knowing your children are gainfully employed and can finally make it on their own. It is equally as nice knowing you no longer need to be keeping your wallet open for their expenses.

Including college costs I wonder how much it costs a typical family to raise (to adulthood) a child? :0

The last figures published her in Britain to raise a child to the age of sixteen years was £25,000.00, roughly about $50,000.00 US.

I just looked at the average cost in the US from age 0 to 18 and it is $200,000 US. College costs were not included.

Is raising a child in the UK cheaper than in the US?

Unfortunately - the high percentage of single parents living on state hand-outs here means it costs next to nothing for some people. I know of a family with 8 children who have never worked - yet run two cars and have been given two houses knocked into one by the town council for which they pay no rent or council tax. They make a profit out of breeding.

We have the same welfare programs in the US.

I was standing in line at our local food market behind a lady with extensive gold jewelry, a leather coat and talking on a cell phone while paying for her bill with food stamps (US welfare paid for by tax payers).

Our tax dollars at work.

If I understand you right, you have a better system than here. In the UK they get paid cash or bank transfer - which they can then spend on booze and cigarettes. Your lot seem to be given food stamps - presumably to limit them to the necessities of life.

The point I was trying to make is that there are folks receiving welfare benefits who apparently not deserving.

I appreciate that.

It could be though that she had to wear her jewellery all the time because she was so destitute she couldn't afford to buy a safe for home use.

Or perhaps she had purchased the food stamps at a discount from someone who preferred to buy drugs rather than food. Which is why she could afford expensive jewellery.

Or perhaps she was a good samaritan shopping for someone who had fallen on hard times and could not get to the store for some reason.

Or perhaps she was a scalliwag milking the system

or............................
