I am actually a computer tech for a school district, so i kind of feel like a car mechanic who needs someone to fix his car haha. But oh well, i don't know what to do about this issue. I had an XP machine before I splurged on a new vista machine. I cleaned up my XP machine and gave it to my brother. Ever since, he has not been able to run a defrag on it. There are two HD's, one is partitioned as 'C' and 'D' and the other HD is mounted as 'Media'. The strange part is D and Media defrag just fine, but when attempting to defrag C, there is an error that says "The scan has been canceled because an error occurred in file C:\windows\sessmgr.setup.log" Can anyone pass along a few tips or hints about what to do? -pops- Posted April 22, 2008 Report Share Posted April 22, 2008 Assuming you are using Windows own defragmenter, have you tried an independent one such as http://www.auslogics.com/disk-defrag ?I was going to suggest Diskeeper but it seems they have stopped doing the free version now. I haven't tried a third party type yet, but will give it a shot.alan2273I noticed that as well. I was thinking maybe that the session log became corrupted, causing my defrag to not perform. A buddy told me to create a new profile user, copying all my data over to that profile. He said by doing this it would create a new session log [along with a new everything else], but i havn't tried that yet. any thoughts?Thanks to you both for your input. Much appreciated. ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted April 23, 2008 Report Share Posted April 23, 2008 If you think that the file is corrupted, run CHKDSK to fix any damage on the file system level.Regarding 3rd-party defragmenters; most are far better than Windows' own defragger. Dsikeeper Lite 7 is still available from many download sites, and Diskeeper 9 is available as part of the Intel Desktop Utilities v2.1.9.66. y2khardtop Posted April 23, 2008 Report Share Posted April 23, 2008 great little defragger called defraggler http://www.defraggler.com/I would run all of your anti-spyware/ anti-virus in SAFE mode, then run your defrag also in safe mode. You should also consider building a boot CD (Win UBCD or Ubuntu), as it is easier to access system errors like this when you are NOT running from the damaged drive.
