Start button gone

While I was out last night my brother in law telephoned with a computer problem. He told 'Er indoors that the start button had disappeared from the corner of the screen. I have no further information, and he is out today, so I cannot speak to him until tomorrow. My question is this. Is it possible for just the start button to disappear, or is he more likely to mean the whole of the task bar? If the start button alone CAN disappear, how can he get this back? :D

Thanks, but as said I don't know at this stage whether or not the whole task bar has gone. If it has there is no problem. I just don't know whether or not the start button alone can disappear. :D

Might want to check in the processes window to ensure Explorer is running.

CTRL+ALT+DEL > Process tab. Make sure Explorer.exe appears in this window. If it does not, you may have to start it manually by going to File > New Task (Run) > explorer.exe

Of course, if explorer is not running there is something more serious going on.

Thanks for the replies. So far however no one has actually said that the start button alone can disappear. I will be phoning him later on. If the whole task bar has gone, it should be easy to bring back, I have had to do so in the past when the little one messed up on my daughters computer. :D

Telephoned him. The whole of the task bar had gone. I had him taking the mouse pointer all round the screen. It turned out that the task bar is now up the left had side, with the start button at the top. I tried to talk him through moving it back, but it is a bit like talking to a wall. He is happy that he can now get it back by taking the pointer to the left of the screen and dragging it to the right. I will move it back when we next visit. :D

Thanks to all who tried to help.
