Sir T Fireball
I'm off to the Island of Madeira on Friday and was wondering if anyone had been before. If so, any tips/suggestions for making the most of the trip?Cheers.
Alan2273
Hope you have a hotel near the bay as it is a very hilly island. It has been twelve years since I was there, but the botanical garedens are beautiful.Dont use taxis as they are expensive. When the plane lands do not worry it will stop before it hits the end of the runway which projects out over the sea. Irene
We went last year in June. It was just beautiful. We stayed in the Vila Gale Hotel in Santa Cruz, near to the airport. No problem with any noise in that respect. The island is just simply lovely. The cable car in Funchal takes you to different levels, where the views are superb. Also, you can take a 'road toboggan' back down again. If you are happy to drive, then just tour around. The central mountainous area is just exquisite...I tried up uplift a Stills Movie, but unfortunately it doesn't work. I'll try to sort a few photos out to post again later. You will have a marvelous time, I'm sure. :D

catgate
It looks to me as thought Madeira is full of "up", with quite a bit of "down". but precious little "on".
doug
But there's a lot of through, especially with the roads. They just go through the tunnels as if the hills were just holy cheese. Beautiful place. Is it the Kapok season? You know the stuff that they used to ram into lifebelts? When the trees start to shed the stuff everyone goes round with hay fever. Make sure you've got some anti-histamine just in case.
Irene
If you like to walk, the levada's are highly recommended. The walks are graded in terms of difficulty. We used one or two of the guided tours (by mini-bus). They were great because we could both enjoy the delightful scenery.Enjoy! Sir T Fireball
Wowser! Some nice replies. Thank you.So, it's extremely hilly, I will suffer from bad hayfever, get ripped off by the taxi drivers and there's a good chance the plane will crash on landing.......Should be fun :D

Irene
Well, I went in the month of June and cannot recall any problem whatsoever. They don't worry me too much, but they just love Mike, so I am certain that we would have noticed any presence!

Someone has claimed that the Island is virtually free of mozzies et al...The island is free of them. They are all dead. They all crash, either at take off or on landing!!.
