Hello Darrin. Welcome to Windows Forum. :D

1. Stop the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]

Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Stop

(Stopping the service will take a moment)

2. Delete the contents of the Download folder:

Start > Run > (type in) %windir%\SoftwareDistribution > [OK]

Open the Download folder and delete its contents

Close the window.

3. Go to Windows Update website | Select CUSTOM and allow the scan to

complete | Uncheck/deselect WinXP SP3 and hide it ("Don't show me this

update again"), if possible.

4. Reconfigure Automatic Updates to the "Notify Only" setting; cf.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306525

5. Start the Automatic Updates service:

Start > Run > (type in) services.msc > [OK]

Double-click Automatic Updates > Click on Start

(Starting the service will take a moment)

6. Should Automatic Updates offer SP3 again, decline to download it.

NB: Free unlimited installation and compatibility support is available for

Windows XP, but only for Service Pack 3 (SP3) and only until 14 Apr-09. Chat

and e-mail support is available only in the United States and Canada. Go to

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?gprid=1173 | select Windows XP

| select Windows XP Service Pack 3

There will come a time (April 2010) when you'll have to have SP3 installed

in order to be offered any more critical security updates.

My quote above is taken from HERE

Please let us know if this works for you..

Feedback is always a useful reference for others with the same question. :)

Out of curiosity, just why do you not want it? It contains many essential updates. Some people had a few problems when it first came out especially as I seem to recall, with some mother boards, (someone correct me if my memory is at fault), but these will have been ironed out by now. I have had it on my computer for ages. :D

Could somebody enlighten me?

I have just installed Service pack 3, as I thought it right to do so.

But what are the main things it does/improve?

During installation, i had a message, from Firewall Active Armor to say that the installation was a RED type ie inferring dangerous. I proceeded to say "Accept" was I wrong?

As you can tell I am not to up on this subject but would like to learn.

Hope this input is understandable!

It would probably have been better to turn off your firewall before installation of SP3, but you were right to "Accept".

Did all go smoothly?

Has everything installed successfully?

Think it went ok, everything seems to be working!

I have gone into Control Panel/Performance & Maintainance/Basic Information about computer, and it says i have XP Service Pack 3, so it seems to be ok.

Should I be checking anything else?

Because it hangs everytime i try to install it. I end up having to turn my computer off on the front switch and let the machine clean up the partially installed program and put it back in the state it was in previous to SP3 install.

Re: SP3 and Windows Mobile 6.1 Problem

I've encountered a compatibility problem with SP3 and Windows Mobile 6.1 causing an annoying beep on my Blackjack II smart phone. The remedy I found is that WM 6.1 will work properly only wth SP2. So, if I remove SP3 using "remove software" will that mess me up? Will I need to download and install SP2 or does by uninstalling SP3 take me back to SP2?

Hi all my first post on here.

Please bear with me as I am a bit of a numpty when it come to computers.

I downloaded SP3 yesterday morning and now cannot access the internet via my PC although I can via my laptop/router.

I tried system restore and that would not allow me to restore to chosen date. Tried re-installing ISP software getting Windows error reports just after starting.

HELP!

Any advice gratefully received.

Thanks

Adam

Uninstalling SP3 is perfectly safe and will take you back to the status before SP3.

You write "downloaded" - did you also install it? Did you also install KB951748, and do you have ZoneAlarm firewall installed by any chance? If so, see this article for the solution.

If not, please post back.
