He cannot resist a free bargain or appealing offer and is regularly having to call on me to sort the computer out - not very often due to malware because AVG and Defender do a good job - more for cronic constipation having been stuffed with so much rubbish and un-needed software.Like him - the computer is old with a small hard drive and poor memory - so is very slow. Last Friday he asked me if I would either build him a new one, or buy one on his behalf.I decided on a sutable spec fpr his needs - Intel E7200 core 2 duo CPU, 3 GB RAM, integrated graphics, 500 GB hard drive storage, DVD ROM and DVD-RW Drives, 19" widescreen monitor etc and did lots of browsing for component and ready built prices from a number of suppliers. I eventually concluded that DELL offered by far the most attractive and competitive package and ordered the computer Friday evening. There was no way I could buy the parts and build one for the money.Saturday morning I received an Email confirming the order and promising delivery before October 8th. There was a web link to their site enabling you to monitor progress of your order.Mid-day Monday I looked at the progress info and found to my surprise that the computer was built and ready for despatch.Tuesday morning at 7.45 am my phone rang - when I answered it a computerised Dalek voice told me that my computer was with the courier and would be delivered on 1st October. I was to input 1 to arrange delivery between 8.00 am and 1:00 pm, 2 for delivery between 1.00 pm amd 5:00 pm and 3 for delivery between 5:00 pm and 8:00 pm. I hit the 1 button and the voice confirmed the delivery date and time slot I had selected.Yesterday the computer arrived at 10:00 am on the promised date and I spent the afternoon setting it up and transferring all his files across (well - nearly all). The Dell desktop includes a customisable docking bar with icons for categories like EMail, Internet, Photos, Videos, Music, Security etc. You can drop the programme start icon onto the relevant category and it is stored there invisibly until you hover the mouse over the category icon and the programmes then can be clicked on. It is a great way of keeping the desktop free of clutter yet making all your programmes and file start icons accessible with just one click. My friend is going to suffer from with drawal symptoms because his present computer desktop is totally cluttered and it takes ages for him to find the particular one he needs.All in all - this experience of DELL has been highly satisfactory. excellent price, very fast and reliable delivery, worked straight out of the box, nice appearance, well made (I had a peep in the tower) and a super friendly desktop interface. In addition, the owners manual - stored on the hard drive - gives comprehensive information on internal components and how to remove and add them with lots of 'elf 'n safety stuff. The only warning is a statement that only a qualified technician should work on the internals - otherwise any damage so caused is not covered by the warranty. Belatucadrus Posted October 2, 2008 Report Share Posted October 2, 2008 I know some people have had problems with Dell, but I've always found them most helpful and on the one occasion where I asked a question, the response from the Irish help centre was over and above the call of duty.
