BT Internet connection

I have set up a new Dell computer for an old friend - with connection to his BT broadband via a Netgear wired ethernet modem router.

I have always used a cable connection on my computers and am not familiar with the BT ADSL connection - fortunately the Netgear installation wizard was very easy to use and the connection was established without difficulty.

However - there is a problem. I am used to my cable connection being made automatically upon booting the computer - but on my friends computer you have to open Internet Explorer or click on a "connect" icon to get the connection established. The problem affects AVG which tries to update itself when the computer is booted but before the connection is manually established. It throws up an error message that it was not able to connect to the server, leaves a red warning flag in the system tray and goes off in a sulk. You have to manually invoke an AVG update.

Am I missing something here ? - is it a feature of an ADSL connection that you have to connect to the internet by manually clicking on "connect" or opening Internet Explorer ?. Is there a way of getting the computer to connect to the internet automatically upon booting to avoid this activity....? I do hope so.... :unknw:

Mine boots at startup, or is always on. I can't find anything in the router to set it the way yours is working. Is it the firewall blocking it :unknw:

I am not sure about the firewall - never thought of looking at that. However - the connection is made as soon as Internet Explorer loads - so the firewall does not get in the way then....

My router is always "on", though it must be "inoperative" when I shut down the computer at night.

I am currently on Linux, but I think that on Windows 98SE there was a setting, somewhere within the Control Panel set up, that controlled this very thing.

Probably Network connections with"Always On" ticked.

"the connection is made as soon as Internet Explorer loads" this is how mine used to work on an ADSL modem, and someone I help has BT on a modem and sometimes this happens, but with a router it is always on and as I said I can't find a setting without allot of input from me in the router settings (I wouldn't know how do it).

Hi Alan, sorry I'm not more up to speed on BT in particular, but it's usually possible to have the router authenticate instead of the computer. There should be an place where you can enter a username and password into the router configuration so it connects and hopefully stays connected all the time, so users behind the router just click on Internet Explorer (or Firefox) and go.

The settings would be on the Netgear router, if I understand what you're trying to do. What model of Netgear is it?

The router is a Netgear DG834 v4.

When I used the Netgear set-up wizard - at some point it asked for the Username and Password - which I entered. Upon completion of the wizard it connected to the internet and loaded Internet Explorer itself - so far as I can recall.

However - even though I left the router with power on (and the Internet indicator lamp stayed lit) - when I rebooted the computer I had to open Internet Explorer before the internet connection was recognised by the computer.
