I am not sure where to put this post, but I suppose here is as good a place as any.

Mankind first started "recording" information on rock, by chipping lumps out of it to make a permanent record. It lasted very well.

This recording of symbols to impart ideas and information went through clay tablets, parchment, papyrus, and paper until we end up with magnetic impulses stored on bits of brittle plastic. As the amount and significance of the information to be recorded increased its permanance decreased.

This morning I was downloading the latest Ubuntu update and found I was updating a "virtual filing system".

The purpose of this post is to put the question, "What the devil is a virtual filing system?" How can one "file" an illusory item? Furthermore is this the next stage along the road to recording information in a totally irretrievable way.

It looks as though it's a bit of a misnomer, as I read it. "Distant" rather than "Virtual".

I was always under the impression that something that was virtual was, like virtue itself, a thing solely of the mind. (Like trust and honesty in a politician.)
