Alan2273 Posted January 14, 2009 Report Share Posted January 14, 2009 First impressions, It would not install on a seperate hard drive because I had a Linux system installed on the first hard drive, as soon as i installed Xp there was no problem.I installed it, updated it and was greeted with the BSOD on boot up.So I rebooted and was greeted with a Windows repair tool, which works very well and was up and running in about 5 minutes, it also gives you a report about what it is repairing, so i was able to see it was a patch that caused the problems.I opened Device manager to find that although I had not installed any motherboard drivers, it had done it for me.There were 3 items with no drivers installed, but I used their web based finder to get the drivers with no problems.It only asks you once when you want to install a program.The security center nags you to get AV software, and takes you to a web page automatically, unfortunately they are all paid for products (Norton, Kaspersky 7 AVG).You have to use a password to log on, which is a good thing.I am quite impressed with it so far.As I explore it more I will add more about it. I started with a dual boot of XP and linux on the same drive. 7 got installed on a separate drive and is working ok like that. I added it to the grub menu and all is well.I have not had any blue screens yet. The only issue I have found was importing IE bookmarks into Firefox. That process locked up twice. I never got Vista due to all the bad press so I cannot compare the two however 7 seems very smooth and user friendly. Once I find my way around more im sure it will be a worthy upgrade from XP if I choose to do that.My install updated itself, there was no need for a separate process by me.In device manager all drivers were automatically installed except for a Visioneer scanner that they will not be releasing a Vista driver for. I experimented a little with newer scanner drivers but to no avail. Macromedia MX installed and Dreamweaver and Fireworks both run on initial tries so thats a big plus for me. I need them. Next I will try virtualbox to see if I can get that to work. If so I can install XP in it to use my scanner if need be. I do the same thing in Linux as there are no drivers for that either and the scanner is not really that old. Next scanner will be a different brand! Other than that my hardware is good to go and I never thought it would be.By the way, there is a FREE AVG available and it works ok. I have a rock-solid configuration on my home machine which I don't plan on changing any time soon. I loathe Vista and have never even considered purchasing it or using it on my personal machine.With all that said, Windows 7 32bit beta has greatly exceeded my expectations.I am running it on a Pentium D 2.8GHz w/ 2GB DDR2It's a bit hefty on the hard drive, but surprisingly much less demanding on memory, despite the fact that it runs MUCH faster than Vista on comparable hardware. It's a bit buggy (hence beta) but I am very pleased otherwise. The new taskbar is intuitive and efficient, they toned down the UAC prompts to almost nothing, I can cold boot to a usable desktop in less than 30 seconds, the hibernation mode effectively emulates a cold boot in <3 seconds, and it includes some pretty nifty apps. For example, the snipping tool allows one to drag a box around any part of the screen and instantly save it as jpeg, gif, png or html. Also, 7 burns disc images natively with a nice little app (simply double clicking an iso brings it up). It preserves (and improves on) the eye candy of Vista without the hideous performance demands.Everything seems to run as smoothly and quickly as on my home XP configuration. Every app I've installed works flawlessly (utorrent, imgburn, picasa, VLC, openoffice, minefield/firefox, etc.) I host shared disk images from a USB hard drive and the images restore about 30% faster through 7 than through XP (how this works, I don't know). all in all I'm impressed, almost too impressed. This drastic of improvement makes me wonder just how defective by design vista was, seeing as how easy it is to make everything much better all of the sudden.
