issue with start up??

hi, my computer specs is:

window xp SP 3

AMD ahtlon™ 64 processor

3400+

2.19GHz, 1.50GB Ram

The problems are:

1. I have problem starting up my computer. The CPU is turned on but the monitor would just go to sleep. It would not load to login page / desktop
   
2. On those times when i managed to start the computer, after user login, it would take about 10mins to load to desktop. Afterwhich, the computer will be lag. Sometime, the computer will just hang for about 5 seconds before it auto-restart. and it will go back to problem (1)
   
3. There was an occasion when my computer was brought to a blue screen which says that some hardware is not installed properly. I checked and already ensure that the hardware are properly slot in.
   
4. All this started 2 wks ago when i moved my cpu while it is turned on and it hang after that.
   

I'm wondering if it is Hard disk issue / power problem / virus? Meantime i would do a full system virus scan.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

Is this a recent problem, can you do a system restore to a time before this happened? Alternatively do you have a back up of your system in a program such as Acronis?

What do you mean by "moved my cpu"? What exactly did you do? The message you mention in 1. indicates the cpu may not be fitted properly & that seems to be the origin of the problem.

sorry for my bad english. well my cpu was initally facing flat on the ground because of my furniture arrangement . tt affected my cd drive as it could not eject out. so i decided to lift it up while the computer is turned on. And from that day onwards, it started giving me problems.

Sometimes it's important to use correct terms to be understood correctly.

In the old days of massive IBM mainframe computers, the CPU was used to refer to that giant central piece of furniture that was the central processing unit - often with blinking lights in front. In today's computers, the CPU is the actual processor - a small chip inside the computer case. This is probably the thing that you moved.

System Restore is part of Windows XP. If you did not explicitly turn it off, you should be able to go back to an earlier restore point; see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306084

Do not worry about your bad English, nuttynibbles. When you write cpu do you mean the whole box or unit containing all the hardware, like motherboard, hard disk drive, CD drive, etc? Then you moved it when it was turned on, & then your problems started?

If so, then I imagine you accidentally disturbed or broke some connection or wiring. In that case I think you should first check all the connections between the unit and the other parts (like power source, video display, etc). Then try to start your computer again.

If you still have the problem after that then you should remove the sides of the computer unit and go through all the internal components and check they are connected properly. If that doesn't solve the problem then I think you have to take the computer to a technician for repair.

I think when you moved it you may have loosened the wires a little Check everything is wired behind the PC properly before opening it up and checking.

Most likely, it's either the big black plug at the top with a switch near it, or the (normally blue) one with little screws in both sides which is usually for monitors, printers and other stuff I think. And also, check at the back of your monitor for leads going to the monitor properly.

IF you mean CPU as the tower/big box thing.

okie i solved the problem. i have installed the free version of zonealarm a couple of months ago and this wk, it kept prompting "zonealarm is initializing, click cancel to shutdown". i went to event log and realise TrueVector Internet Monitor service terminated unexpectedly for many occasions. so i decided to uninstall in safe mode n now my window works. seems strange but i hope everything goes fine.

now i need another good firewall humph....

What version of ZoneAlarm did you have - maybe a newer version would solve the problem?

P.S. uninstalling ZoneAlarm should be done with the /clean option, if possible. Otherwise it will leave all kind of stuff behind.

Or, if you want an alternative to ZoneAlarm you could try Comodo free (HERE) which now comes with an anti-virus component as well (so you'd need to uninstall your existing anti-virus). It's a bit fiddly to use however.

Or you could try the trusty old Sygate, which is still available from sites like (TUCOWS). Very simple to use & very reliable, no longer updated however since Norton brought the company up.
