jdb Posted February 27, 2009 Report Share Posted February 27, 2009 Here's hoping someone has run across this problem and can shed a bit of light before I pull what hair I have remaining out.A few days ago, I reformatted and installed XP w/SP3. Since that time, I have had no system sounds. I can play an audio CD or download music and play that but if I click on a video ie youtube, the video plays but no sound. Also as I mentioned, I have no system sounds, ie windows shutdown, email notification etc.I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers till I am blue in the face.......I have run the "sfc /scannow".......I have run registery checks......nothing helps.I read where the problem could be SP3....so, I try to uninstall it.......first, there is nothing in "add/remove programs about SP3.....then I try the "$ntservicepackuninstall$ folder within my Windows folder......it does not exist.......so, then I install the Recovery Console and try that.......still cannot find the "ntservicepackuninstall$ folder on the dvd of Win XP Pro.......My system is an oldie but goodie......it is AMD 2gig......running 2 gig ram.......NF7S ver 2 Abit Motherboard.....Using onboard sound which is a Nvidia chipset.......All drivers are up to dateIf anyone could lend assistance on either clearing up the sound problem or removing SP3, I would be extremely gratefulThanks muchRespectfullyjd Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
ɹəuəllıʍ ʇɐb Posted February 27, 2009 Report Share Posted February 27, 2009 Welcome to the Windows Forum.If you installed Windows XP directly with SP3, then there is no way of uninstalling that service pack.If you can play sounds from certain applications, then there is nothing wrong with your audio drivers.Check Control Panel: Sounds and Audio Devices, tab Sounds; maybe some items (like Windows Start) have sounds disabled? I checked in "sounds & audio devices" and nothing is disabled. Even when you choose a system sound and click the button to play the sound, it appears it is playing.....just nothing coming out the speakers.Tufenuf, thanks much for the link......however in going there, I am unsure how to treat the hex remedies. I am familiar with "messing" in my registry but I am not sure how to treat this. If you could shed a bit of light on this, I will surely give it a try.....after all, nothing I have done to this point has worked.......Oh, and I guess I forgot to mention, I did install the newest Adobe Flash Player and Java. In my particular case it turned out to be of no value, but what I discovered amongst it all was a setting which was relevant to switching between onboard sound system and PCI card sound system. It may be worth while having a look there. Though how to explain how it has been switched by your previous actions totally eludes me. In my particular case it turned out to be of no value, but what I discovered amongst it all was a setting which was relevant to switching between onboard sound system and PCI card sound system. It may be worth while having a look there. Though how to explain how it has been switched by your previous actions totally eludes me.Thanks Catgate. That was one of the first things I did when I found I had no sound. jdb Posted February 28, 2009 Author Report Share Posted February 28, 2009 I am not sure if this will prompt any memories but I can also go into the windows\media folder and play any sound in there but it still will not play normally on shut down, start up or anything else.
