Monitor query

I have an ASUS VW192s LCD monitor and have had it for well over a year. On one or two occasions in the past there has been evident a slight discrepancy in the aspect ratio of screen image v printed image, and I had put this down to manually fiddling with the image prior to printing by using "handles".

However today I printed out a picture of a steam railway engine which had only been shrunk by means of the linked vertical and horizontal pixel method in the GIMP control panel. After printing the firebox door was oval and management (standing beside the engine) was very thin.

So I downloaded a circle from Google Images and measured it, on the screen, with my vernier gauge. The circle on my screen both in Google Images and GIMP was not circular. It's vertical diameter was 86.4mm and its horizontal dia. was 103.7 mm. But it printed out circular at 90.2 mm.

I then made the discovery that the "rulers" on the GIMP screen, which are set in inches (A4 paper), are also at variance with each other. The horizontal inch being 1.151" and the vertical one 0.965 in.

So my question to the experts is "How interconnected are screen resolution settings and aspect ratios?" I can see there could well be a connection, but then again the entire business of screen resolution seems to be something of a black art.

On this machine (HP 1740) a circle is noticeably elliptical and nothing I do will make it change to what it should be. Any alteration I make to the settings in respect of length/width ratio are lost on the next switch on.

Is this a disadvantage of the solid electronics screen over that of the old fashioned vacuum tube CRT? I think this is one of the reasons my son's graphics business is keeping CRTs as long as possible.

Similarly, have you noticed the colours of the screen bear little resemblance to those the machine prints - on ANY printer?

Re. Colours . I had put that down to transmitted versus reflected light. The colours of a projected colour transparency were always much more "alive" than a colour print.

As far as circles and things go I find it most difficult to sort out.

As I was trawling for information this morning I came across someone talking about square pixels versus rectangular pixels and converting one to another. Then a chap elsewhere claimed they had no shape, but were merely "points in space".

The thing I find most odd is the fact that

This suggests to me that I have rectangular pixels (maybe some of that pink ointment will cure them) caused by the screen resolution....but then all screen resolutions are rectangular even CRT's, but I do not recollect this problem prior to getting this monitor.

It impinges on so many aspects of image manipulation. I took a photograph of management, with the camera held at 90 degree to normal, for compository reasons, and when I rotated it to print she was a 'changed person'.

No, rong, I have not tried that. Mainly because it seemed to me that if it was entirely pixel related it would not solve the problem, it would only reduce it, because all screen resolutions seem to be "rectangular".

It is probably worth experimenting just for the hell of it.

The first is 1680 by 1050 and the second is 1600 by 900

Edit and they both look the same on that so I have either got lost in my posting or something, as on my monitor they looked totally different

The native resolution for your monitor is - I believe - 1440 x 900

You need to set your display to this resolution to get the correct picture and optimum performance.

If your computer monitor driver does not allow you to select this resolution - then you need to find a driver that will. I understand that you may be using Linux - this may be the problem if no compatible driver is available.

Well, Alan, the shift to 1440 x 900 has certainly altered the rulers in Gimp. The vertical graduations are now the same physical size as the horizontal graduation and that can only be a good omen. I am overcome with delight.

I shall experiment some more before I award you the ultimate Yorkshire accolade, the leather medal with a tripe centre. But don't wait up, I have a poking letter to compose and write to our County Planners.
