Aloush Posted April 18, 2009 Report Share Posted April 18, 2009 Hey guys!I have just purchased a Seagate FreeAgent 320Gb External Hard driveI have connected via USb to an old PC i have i dont know any information about this PCBut i want to install windows XP to this harddrivecan i do that and if so how?I get upto the part where i have to select where to install windows when i click enter on the partiton it says"Your computers startup program cannot gain access to thedisk containing the partition or free space you chose.Setup cannot install windows XP on this hard disk.This lack of access doesn't necessarily indicate an errorcondition.For example, disk attached to a SCSI adaptor that wasn'tinstalled by your computer manufacturer or to a secondaryhard disk controller, are typically not visible to thestartup program unless special software is used. Contactyour computer manufacturer for more information.On x86 - based computers, this massage may indicate aproblem with the COMS drive type settings.See your disk controller documentation for moreinformation." catgate Posted April 18, 2009 Report Share Posted April 18, 2009 To the best of my knowledge, as I understand what you are proposing, you are out of order.You need an M$ key code to install XP on a machine and your Seagate FreeAgent would form part of a machine when you tried to use the XP. In any case the keycode would have to be lodged in the machine before you could use it.I have no personal experience of XP, but there are those on here who are experts "par exellence", and who will no doubt give you the low down when they venture forth. -pops- Posted April 18, 2009 Report Share Posted April 18, 2009 It may be possible to do as you want if your computer BIOS has a "legacy USB" that is to say has its own USB drivers rather than, what is usually the case, USB being a function of the Windows operating system. If your computer is old, it may well not have this facility and not all modern machines are fitted like this either.The best thing you can do is install XP on the "C" drive - where it normally resides and use your external drive for everything else.
