Hibernation

I recently reinstalled Windows XP Pro on my laptop including drive format. Afterwards I upgraded the RAM to 4gb. Both op's were successful :D with one exception.

Now using the power options I am unable to get the Hibernation to work, when I tick the enable hibernation box and select "Apply" I get a message :-

"Unable to reserve Hibernation file"

"The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process"

Any ideas please :D

Have you tried doing it in Safe Mode ?

By default, WXP has numerous processes going on in the background which prevent hibernation starting.

Things like Indexing Service for "fast file searching" and other such (to me) pointless processes will most likely prevent hibernation taking place.

I gave up trying to make hibernation work as far back as W98 and now always shut down at the end of the day/session. Better for the environment as well.

I use windows vista 32 bit, and use a gadget for windows sidebar called "control system with clock" and it has among other options > hibernate which works

perfectly on my computer. Maybe you could try this if it is compatible with xp. good luck.

My computer in 2003 with XP Home I used Hiberation and then it got stuck - took it to the tech where I had just bought it and he disabled it saying it is a pest - never use it as you can get stuck just like this. Unable to load but he got in the back door.

Haven't ever tried it on the current one. Not game and anyway like Pops said - best to shut down the lot and save power and also with desktop switch off at the wall and stop fire risk on monitor as same as TV on standby uses power but is also at risk of fire.

Only things we don't turn off are clocks and DVD player at the wall plus of course fridge freezer and HWS must to stay on.

they reckon you can save AU$ 800 a year doing this!! We had been doing it for years anyway!! But nice to know we are saving the power bill and the planet.

Even if we have just had the 10 coldest years on record here.

And this year is even colder!
