Why notepad?!

Recommended Posts

There would appear to be something, perhaps a virus that has corrupted the file association on your .exe files. I also note from your screen dump that your Norton Antivirus appears to be deactivated, again another possible sign of virus infection. There are a few things you could try some of the online virus scanners like :- Rising, Trend, Bitdefender or Panda.

You could also try the avast! virus cleaner, Do note the Solving other problems instruction section on how to get it to run if .exe is as I suspect corrupted.

If, for example, only the association for .EXE files has been corrupted, you may run the avast! Virus Cleaner by renaming it to a .COM file. The other extensions you may try are .SCR, .BAT, .PIF (on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003, you may try .CMD as well).
.

I can't tell why your reformat failed without knowing how you tried to do it, but do note you can't reformat a windows disk while windows is running. You need to boot from the Windows CD or a startup disk.

Musang, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 12 (left column) and click on "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP" to download a reg file fix. Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it or right click it and choose "merge" and answer yes to the import prompt.

http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

If you can't run the file do the following:

Press CTRL-ALT-DEL and open Task Manager. Once there, click File, then hold down the CTRL key and click New Task (Run). This will open a Command Prompt window. Enter REGEDIT.exe and press Enter. Once regedit is open click File>Import and locate that reg file fix, hilite it and click Open.

Note: If you can't access the Internet with the problem computer use another computer to download the reg file fix onto a CD, thumb drive, or floppy and transfer the file to the problem computer then run it.

Hello and welcome to the forum. :flowers:

If you can access the internet, try running THIS online scan.

(Use the new 6.6 version which is offered on the web page in the online link, "Try the new version now".)

Do you have any idea at all where this may have come from?

Like, did you download anything or install anything?

Are you able to use System Restore? If you can, you could try restoring your system to a point to before this came from.

EDIT:- Nevermind. You reformatted. Ignore this post.

Musang, Try the "exefix_xp.com" utility at the link below.

.EXE files always open with Notepad or any other application ?
