I've never understood Gimp at all... Does it work on layers like Photoshop?

Anyway.

Adobe let you download a free 30 day trial of CS4 from their website which after you have to purchase it.

So yes, it can be downloaded but it's not free forever. :(

Serif Photoplus is much cheaper than Adobe Photoshop, and they allow free downloads of their older versions: HERE. But read some reviews first to make sure it does what you want it to do.

My problem is I used to have an old pc Windows 98 and I had photoshop installed and I used to scan photos with no problem.

I recently got a laptop and disposed of my old pc and when I came to scan a photo my scanner would'nt work, I don't have photoshop installed so I tried to download it but no luck, either I don't have the driver etc or there is something wrong with my scanner, whatever, I can't scan photos anymore

At the risk of being boring can I repeat

I too was on W98SE and was fond of Photoshop and PSP. However, I put a machine together to try Linux, and stayed with it, but I kept my W98 machine running mainly for image manipulation.

I played about with Gimp on the linux machine and found that it really was very similar to PSP and in many ways better, although It does look a bit different at the outset. Now all image work is done in Gimp and I like it better that the other two, and the M$ machine is only used if I want to use the internet when management is using the linux machine.
