rayj00
Ok, I don't know what the heck happened...I'm running Vista Home Premium(64bit).I have a 1T USB external drive I am using for backup and storage. Been using itfor nearly a year with no problems. It hasabout 150GB free space, so you can see I have a lot of stuff onit that I would really hate to loose. For some reason, I can no longer access the drive. It comes up in Windows Explorer and shows the drive name as usualas well as free and used space, but whatever I try to do with it, it hangsand I loose communications with the OS. If I power it down, I can thenuse the OS.When I go to Computer Management/Storage/Disk Management it just sitsthere, "Loading Disk Configuration Information". Nothing else comes up,not even my C: drive! In Device Manager, I can see the drive. Clicking on it it says the drive is working properly. But on the "Volumes" tab, everything is blank. If I go back to Windows Explorer it shows up with free and used space. IfI double click it, Windows Explorer says "Computer (Not Responding). And weird things happen to the OS (Desktop goes blank or totally black). The only way to recover is power cycle the problem drive. At one time I was able to see all of the folders on the drive but when Itried to access one, the problems above happened. Is there way for me to low level reformat and save the contents of the drive? Please let me know if you need more information. Thanks,Ray

catgate
It used to be possible, but expensive. I feel sure there will be some outfit here :-http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q...q=Data+recovery

I feel sure there will be some outfit here :-http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q...q=Data+recoveryThanks.I ended up taking it to Best Buy. $159.00 to recover ~600GB of data....Looks like the drive itself was good but the mother board fried!!!I probably could have taken the HD out and did it myself...At least I'll have a spare 1TB drive to do something with????I bought a Seagate external USB 1.5TB!!! ($149.00).....2 year warranty...Ray
Seshomaru Samma
Next time take your USB to another computer to test it out, the "fried motherboard" thing sounds like Best Buy's way of making an extra buck

-pops-
Always remember to disconnect any USB drive in the approved way.I have known numerous drives destroyed by injudicious "pulling the plug".See http://forums.windowsforum.org/index.php?showtopic=32464
