Graphics driver???

Hi this is my first post here so, hi my name is zman101

so anyway yesterday i restored my computer and ive downloaded some esentials

such as java, directx 10 (websettup), and flash then i did the whole windows update thing.

After that i got firefox and updated internet explorer. Now i start with my games i downloaded valve's portal (demo version through steam) and installed knights of the old republic via disc. So now comes the wierd part. I tried launching portal and it shows that weird pic of some guy with a valve on his head then the 'powered by source' then.. Nothing! Its gone, poof. Now i know lots of ppl get that error so i tried alot of solutions online but none helped. So now i try KOTOR and it shows the option menu then i config it to low on everything then i start the game and it shows ship then crash its gone.

So the wierd thing is those games used to work!!! So anyway i downloaded cpuz and checked under graphics tab and ALL boxes are GREY.

From what i remember i had some kind of ati readon card.

So i think i need the driver. But every where i look its always 'pay us' or not supported. And one thing i know for sure is if there was a cd or some thing its long gone.

So can anyone help me with finding the right driver. Free please!!! I got it free b4 tough I didnt have to DO anything. It just came with it. Plz help!! :(

Ps im going to look inside my comp today and check for exact graphics card.

Download PCWizard 2009 from here, http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php install it then click on the video icon, this will tell you your make of graphics card, then if it is Nvidia, get the drivers free from here, http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us if it is ATI get your drivers free from here http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx

i cant find a graphics card in there unless..

it might be Directx Version 9.0c (September 2009)

its at the bottom under the system summary tab

it says "Click on DirectX

icon on the toolbar Configuration

for more information"

A different approach would be to find graphics card details from something like Belarc Advisor. You should then be able to go to the appropriate website to obtain the drivers required.

Belarc is from http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

It's free and quite harmless to your machine.

Note that if no details are offered for a graphics card it means that the computer has integrated graphics (included on the motherboard) so the motherboard details and drivers should be looked for.

I KNOW that thats not true.

every time i install a driver its all "no compatable hardware"

i wish you guys could just see my computer for yourselves and then fix it.

No separate graphics card there :( so it looks like you are using onboard graphics .... + the latest Intel® Graphics Media Accelerator Driver for that motherboard is here :-

You need to do an awful lot more Windows updating, you have a massive number of critical ones missing !

Do you have your monitor's video cable connected to the blue VGA connector on the motherboard itself ?

instead of to the ATI Radeon card that you thought you had installed ????

hey thanks guys i got that motherboard thingy and it worked for portal but it crashes after i go through the first portal after countdown (if youve played the game then you know what im talking about) i believe it ma just need some option tweaking if anyone has suggestions let me know...

what did you mean by critical stuf where would i update..

ive saearched and portal just dont like my graphics ive tried just about all possible start options.

so any other ideas?

hey that blue cord apparently "stupid question" was not stupid.

(my comp was cleaned recently so obviously they unplugged all cords then plugged back in im guessing they tried one by one got to #2 and "succeeded" and that was that)

i checked inside my computer and found that it was connected to the main board where there were four possible ports so i tried #1 (failed to boot)

#2 (current)

#3 (failed to boot)

#4 (success)

so im assuming that specific plug routes to my ATI card.

however now i have that intel thingy installed so it still thinks my graphics are the same as they were 5 secconds ago.

im going to retry those ATI cards.

PS i know its under win xp pro then readon but there are tons of different ones. WHICH one is mine???

Thabks guys for all your help. The intel graphics accelerator thing worked however after further insides explorations i found that i have no card!!! Its gone! So im sorry to have bothered you but still i got the intel thing.

I have one last question b4 i close out this post what video card would you recomend? Im looking for something beetween 50-100$ im not really willing to spend lots of money on a computer i might be trashing soon. Although of course i could salvage the card anyway.

So Nvidia, ATI, anything. what is the best card up to 100$?

The panel is not part of the slot its just there like an inch or two away.

Actualy i have it like this

then two of the

then one

The first agp slot is being used (for telephone line internet) ((which i dont use but its just there))

just to be sure

- is a slot and | is like the seperator

so the long one with the long slot (----------------------------) then the short one (-----) looks like
