Tabs or tables in posts

What is the easiest way of setting out tabular information in a post so that information posted in vertical columns is indeed vertical.

I am spacing the lines into columns by inserting rows of full stops - but it aint easy and it aint pretty.

I was just struggling with that Alan. When doing the layout with tabs etc it looked OK but the submission removed all the format.

The problem is that the layout of the forum page varies with the screen resolution and with the size of the window in which you view the forum page. Try dragging the side of the page inwards and you will see what I mean.

I don't think there is a real answer - apart from converting the layout to a graphic but, there is a trick which may help:

Do the layout with full stop separators (as per Alan) and change the text colour of those full stops to match the background. It won't work with very wide tabulation.

Not really. It's referring to the problems Alan's having putting a table into his water thread.

The horizontal scrolling problem occurs when the there is an overfull line of text with no spacers. Again, this could vary with screen resolution and width of the viewing window.

I just tried pops suggestion in my Water thread - its a bit of a faff - but gives a better appearance. Thanks for that one pops.

The other problem about using full stops as spacers is that the window you type in (and get your data vertical) changes when you post it so that the data is no longer vertical. You then have to note which lines need extra or deleted full stops to try and align the text. On a multi column table this iteration can take a few attempts to get right.

This forum, as almost everything on the Internet, is HTML based. HTML does not support tabs, nor does it support multiple space characters.

But it does support tables, and Windows Forum subscribers can use HTML code to put tables into posts. As an example see the tiny small table in this post.

Good information pat - Oh to be able to use HTML code. It seems an awful lot of stuff to type for the small example table you posted. I'm going to have to stick with the full stop method.

I have just realised that it is possible to upload a .doc file into a post. This provides the opportunity to display a complex table to readers who are able to open a MS Word file. The actual table is not displayed in the posting - instead a clickable link to Word which opens the document.
