Hb_Kai Posted November 16, 2009 Report Share Posted November 16, 2009 I was reading some stuff about the Haiku operating system and when reading that Google were supporting it, I thought I would also try and find out when the Chrome operating system is due for its release and apparently, from the below two articles, is set to be released this week.This article was published at TechCrunch.com three days ago:Google Chrome OS to launch within a weekThis one from 11th of this month:Technology News | Google's CHROME OSBut I thought that Chrome was to be open-sourced and the source code gets released this autumn and that the operating system was not going to be ready until the second half of 2010.I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything about this? Belatucadrus Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 Looks as if they're loosing the Beta this week, I'm downloading the iso to burn to disk, but the comments on it from Google are confusing. They're indicating that it'll be almost entirely cloud based with nothing actually installed in the PC but the OS, yet they're shipping the beta with OpenOffice, weird or what. AlanHo Posted November 20, 2009 Report Share Posted November 20, 2009 I can see some advantage in having an OS that boots in less than 10 seconds and having your documents and data stored on their servers - in that they are accessible wherever you are - but I would be nervous about remote storage of my valuable stuff. I much prefer my own back-ups.The big problem for me is the fact that the computer presumably becomes a useless brick if you are somewhere where you cannot get web access. We have a country retreat (sounds good - but it is a static caravan in Far Forest near Bewdley) where I cannot get web access. I sometimes while away the liesure days there catching up on photo editing. Chrome would not allow that.Hence my laptop is likely to stay on XP - until something better comes along.
