Windows xp updates destination folder

Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my EeePC netbook. Because of its really small hard disk size (4GB), I can't start downloading updates, without receiving "low hard disk space" messages, which are really annoying. I've read about specific tips and tricks about this mtter, such as compressing hard disk, moving the documents folder to another disk, deleting temp various temp files, installing programs to another disk and others. To be honest I don't mind about moving the the documents folder or installing programs to another disk but I really don't wanna compress my hard disk. So here's my question: Is there any way to set the download folder for the windows update files from c to d? I already download a program from asus site to install various programs to d, but I can't find one for the updates files. I'm not talking about installing updates, I'm talking about DOWNLOADING them to a different destination, such as d drive.

You can download the updates with your browser and select any directory you want , this might work for you if you have another partition ("D") or you can use another box to download the updates and install them manually on your eepc.

Thanks man, but to be honest I'm kind of lost here! I did open the site but couldn't find the option to let me choose the destination folder for the updates...!! Any hints?

I think it's more a question of how your browser works. In Firefox, for example, if you click on tools/options then on the general page there is a box that asks where you want your dowloads to be saved. May be different in other browsers. Post as to which one you are using and I'm sure someone will give you guidance how to set up that one.

Well I kind of have to use Internet Explorer cause Microsoft updates only work with that...!!

You can use Firefox with the IE Tab add-on - which enables you to get Microsoft updates.

Can also save a bit of time when Microsoft's server is busy and chugging along at a slow rate of knots and you've got into that state where you are just ready to slit your wrists trying to download just "one" "KBx009911288?" update :lol:

To help with the original problem - low disk space on the C: drive - I recommend CCleaner. There are additional ways, e.g. compressing the .DBX files if you use Outlook Express, or removing old System Restore Points (using Windows' Disk Cleanup tool).
