How do I transfer files?

Recommended Posts

I am using Vista which appears to be corrupted beyond repair and will replace it with Windows 7. Prior to doing this I want to move all my .flv, mp3,.jpg etc files to an external hard drive. These files are in different places on my hard drive (C:). Ideally I would like them transferred and then deleted. How do I do this?

You could try something along the lines of

"COPY C:\Program Files\Folder-name\*.X F:\"

where F: is your destination (external HD or Memory stick)and Folder-name is where your valuable files are now stored, and X is .jpg or 'flv or mp3 or whatever turns you on.

Ahhhh Catgate, you're showing your age.<G> I grew up on DOS and of course thought of copy c:\*.flv X:\flv. Then I figured we're in the 21st century and someone would know how to do it from Vista. Lacking a response on how to do it from Vista I'll have to use our DOS route. Thank you for the reply.

Bear in mind that there may be some problems as you say that Vista is corrupted beyond recovery. In my experience dragging and copying using the right mouse button to a USB drive is by far the easiest way to do this task. Of course you have to click on Folders to get the list of locations on the left of the screen. Then after doing each drag & copy you can open it to ensure it's accessible and usable.

Delete them to the Recycle bin and use a proprietry eraser if you want them wiped clean.
