Irene
After the snow overnight on Saturday/Sunday, the sun came out yesterday and did a fairly good job melting it....However, this morning, following the freezing overnight temperatures, the roads are sheet ice! :0I duly set out this morning to go to work, battling with the local road, but once I reached the 'main' road (B not A rated) into town it was treacherous. All the cars were crawling along. The road has a relatively short downhill slope at one point and 'sports' three sets of those dratted speed control bumps. Every time a car went over the bump, it was anyone's guess where it would land the other side! My rear-wheel drive SLK was just sliding down - no acceleration, tiniest touch on the brakes. I was petrified. After very very slowly negotiating each bump, my car slid into the curb. I just couldn't do anything about it. When I finally reached the bottom onto level ground again, I gingerly drove to a lay-by a short way along and pulled in. I was shaking like a leaf. :( Just up ahead I would have to tackle a short steep upward incline with a right-angled left-hand bend over the railway. No way!! :0 Thank heaven for mobile phones - I rang home to Mike and said I can't go any further. I sat and waited whilst he came out to me - then I sat in his car while he drove mine home - I couldn't get back into it again! - he finally walked back and drove me home.It was a personal nightmare. I am usually a confident driver, but these conditions just completely beat me. :(
andsome
I set out at 10-30 this morning to take 'Er indoors for a blood test at Cannock Chase hospital. As I turned onto the main road off the estate I almost turned a complete circle as the car spun. Further down the hill someone had smashed up a van. AlanHo
I saw some of the treacherous conditions on this evening's news. It would appear that for the rest of the week the temperatures will rise and ice is unlikely - instead we can look forward to heavy rain and floods.
