AlanHo Posted February 26, 2010 Report Share Posted February 26, 2010 One of my friends - whose hobby is buying stuff at car boots, doing it up and flogging it at auctions - came home with an interesting small antique cabinet last weekHe believes it is Victorian, is beautifully crafted in mahogany (or similar) with the following featuresIt measures 15" wide x 18" deep x 48" high overallIt sits on small iron castorsIt has a cupboard with a drop down door hinged at the bottom. The door has sides projecting into the cupboard and a back which forms a compartment in which is located a removable galvanised iron binThere is a small drawer above the cupboard, a top shelf and a mirror set in the back.I have done a rough sketch as below.We are now debating what it might have been used for - the galvanised bin is well sealed and would be be capable of holding water - but this may of course not be relevant.Has anyone any idea what it might be.....? -pops- Posted February 26, 2010 Report Share Posted February 26, 2010 It looks like a cabinet my Granny had in the kitchen - apart for the mirror at the back (is that original?)There was a removable hardwood top on the working surface. She used it for chopping vegetables with all the detritus being dropped into the bin. The drawer held various knives and suchlike.The bin was lifted out every day and the contents fed to the two pigs that were kept at the bottom of the garden. The mirror appears to be original.It looks more at home in a lounge or dining room than in a kitchen. I have found some similar cabinets on the internet - originally used for keeping ice - but none have drop down doors. Just a lead lined cupboard with a conventional side hung door. They all have thick doors and sides - presumably for insulation - whereas the unit we are trying to identify has no extra insulation.
