WINDOWS 7 HOME PREMIUM CORRUPT REGISTRY

Okay. Bought this computer new in Dec. Xmas present for self for year end bonus.

1 - It has been running fine.

2 - Only installs made in late Dec. and early Jan. Both of these have been running fine.

3 - 2 days ago started up computer and it is running slow.

By slow I mean if you try to open any program or utility it loads for about 5 minutes. Then you get not responding. If I wait for another 5 minutes it will "right" itself and continue to work. Yet anytime you try to access another program it will hang again.

4 - Ran several of the utilities and it says that the registry is corrupted.

5 - It will not run in safe mode. To run in safe mode it has to run autochk and it cannot run autochk becuase of recently installed programs. Although the only recently installed programs have been automatic windows updates.

6 - Cannot restore system to an earlier date because the registry is corrupt.

7 - Task manager shows no drain on memory.

8 - Malware finds no viruses or malicious code.

9 - Just for reference it acts like it has a trojan virus eating up memory, but the memory check says it is okay.

10 - Have also noticed that it appears to freeze when making a call to a sub program.

For example: When I finally get on the net it runs fine searching, but if you click on a link it goes through the 5 min. not responding and then a nother 5 min. or so before it will keep working.

Can anybody shed any light on what I need to do?

I have experience with Windows XP. Not really versed on Windows 7.

I wish I could throw some light on your problem - but I can't.

However - you are not alone. I have been battling with my wife's computer for a couple of days with a similar problem. It runs on Win 7 home premium 32 bit with IE8 and connects to the internet via our home network. She uses Google as her home page and gmail for emails. It has run perfectly for several months but has suddenly taken a strong dislike to anything Google. All other web sites run fine - the problem is confined to google and any links that emenate from there.

IE8 opens OK to the google home page but the link to gmail is flaky. More often than not gmail opens with a corrupt page - but if you hit refresh it re-opens OK. If you open an email with a link to an attachment or image the screen "pulses" and IE8 then freezes. You have to Ctrl Alt Del to close IE8 and open it again. After a couple of such successive incidents IE8 will refuse to open and if you use the diagnostic tool it re-sets the network adapter to allow you to open IE8 again and then repeat the cycle.

I tried a restore with Acronis back to April when it was running fine - but after an hour or so the problem returned. I then replaced the C: hard drive with a new hard disc and did a clean installation of Win 7 and all her programs - only to have the problem return after a couple of hours. Like you I have thoroughly checked for malware - the cpu temperatures - tried a couple of memory sticks from my computer and have cursed for England - but still no solution.

Do please post back here if you resolve your problem in the hope it will give me a clue or two. I built her computer last year and am fast losing brownie points.

I do not think that will help in my case. My main problem is that all of my programs are acting this way.

Windows Explorer is flaking out just like IE.

Sorry that was aimed at AlanHo as someone I try to help has had problems with IE8, you could try a repair to see if that would put right anything that is wrong, not that up on W7 either

Who/what tells you that the registry is corrupt?

I have run Windows 7 Home Premium on 32 bit and IE8 from day one. No problems here. I don't use Goggle mail, but Google is my home page. I use Windows live mail. What happens if you do away with google mail? IE8 also ran fine on the same computer using XP, but I don't use third party mail programs.:)

Confused - As stated in my post - I built the computer myself.

Rong - Going back to IE7 might be possible - but her computer had Win7 from the start and IE8 is part of Win7. Hence I would have to find a way of uninstalling IE8 completely (not just disable it in Control Panel) and install IE8 from a download. I am not willing to do this because my wife's computer is virtually a clone of mine - same mobo, same cpu, same memory, identical software etc just a slightly later case design - and mine runs sweetly (at present!!!) I have also spent ages comparing the settings on both computers - especially IE8 to ensure they are the same. I am tempted to think it may be a hardware problem - but what?. Her computer is perfectly stable and she can browse any site - even this one - without problems. As soon as she opens her google page and her gmail - the wheels fall off.

Its a bummer...............

The one I had problems with was an XP machine and the role back helped, I think it's to do with microsoft doing to much to try to keep you safe so the sooner everyone changes to FF the easier it will be.

I don't want to get involved with silly arguments. I can only repeat what I said above. I use W7 home premium, with Windows live mail and IE8. Is Google mail causing this problem on this particular computer? Millions use IE without problems, and use Windows live mail. Many of the problems on here and other computers seem to come from users of FF, Thunderbird, Google mail etc. A disproportionate number in fact. Surely it is worth while for Alan to completely uninstall Google mail and give it a try using windows live mail. What is it about many FF users that they constantly feel the need to push it at IE users who have tried and rejected FF?

The last time I changed my Email address I notified everyone in my contact list - only to discover later on that several had not acted on it and had not changed their records. They could so easily have lost touch with me.

I can appreciate that. It just seems to me that there are quite a few complaints about G mail.

I never heard of any problem(s) with Gmail; I have myself used it since the early beta. It doesn't install anything on your computer; it can be used as a webmail account, or with any mail client such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, Thunderbird, ...

I am glad about that, BUT, a lot of people do seem to get problems. There appear to be more complaints about this and other e mail programs when compared with the MS ones. Unless it's my imagination.:)

But Gmail is NOT an email program; it is just an email service that can be accessed via web browser or any existing email program. It must be your imagination! :lol:

All I know is that my wife has a gmail account which she accesses via her "My Google" home page on her IE8 browser. When she is able to open an Email and then clicks on a link or attachment in the message - the browser freezes. After several instances of using the task manager to close and then re-open IE8 - gmail refuses to open.

When she accesses my Hotmail account via her browser - there are no problems with the messages, links or attachments.

I remain mystified why the problem is confined to IE8 and gmail.

At the risk of starting another fracas - I tried Firefox on her computer as an experiment - it worked OK. Thus proving that IE8 and gmail are not happy with one another on her machine - but on mine it is absolutely fine.

Until I sort this out - she is having to use my computer to use gmail.

When you (your wife, respectively) open the Gmail page, while it is loading, there is a link 'Load basic HTML' at the bottome of the page. Can you have her click that link; most likely it will behave better than the heavily scripted standard page.

There are also way to access Gmail through a regular mail client like Outlook, Outlook Express, Windows Mail, etc. If you choose to try that, make sure you use the IMAP method, so that all mail in the Inbox will still remain on the Gmail servers.

Update in case anybody wants to know.

1 - Everything is fixed.

2 - I have been told that the automatic Windows updates caused it.

3 - Had to reinstall Win7 and bring computer back to out of box.

(Only 2 programs installed since I bought this thing and both had been on the computer since Jan. with no problems or issues.)

4 - I use several email services and do not have a problem. Through out this issue the email and internet both worked better than items from the desktop.

5 - I am not sure that I would ever want to build a computer. To think that I have more resources than say Dell, is arrogance not intelligence and like most things of this nature resources are what makes a good computer mfg.

How did you reinstall windows 7 from a recovery partition or from a Win 7 dvd?
