jmaster18 Posted July 11, 2010 Report Share Posted July 11, 2010 I am using windows vista home premium and I recently bought windows 7 ultimate installation disc.However I dont know what to do.If I upgrade vista to 7 is it sure that I will keep my files and I have also heard that I will lose my programs and I will have to reinstall them, is it true?Also I have a 320 GB HDD currently not partioned with windows vista homepremium installed.Can I upgrade vista to 7 and create a new partion only for windows 7 and leave another big in size partition for files and programs?Thanks in advance Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
AlanHo Posted July 11, 2010 Report Share Posted July 11, 2010 Whatever you do - you are advised to back them up onto other media. Preferably an external hard drive. It is very unwise not to have a proper back up system for your valuable data - sooner or later your hard drive will fail. There are two kinds of computer users - those who have their data properly backed up and those who wish they had.You will also need to install all your other software into Windows 7 - you cannot simply copy it across.You first need to check that your hardware is compatible with Windows 7. Microsoft provide software you can download to carry out this check.It is possible to create another partition on your hard drive and instal Windows 7 to dual boot. However - I can see no advantage in you doing that. You would be better off creating a new parttion D: then move all your data files to it and then install Windows 7 to replace Vista in your existing C: drive. I have run the MS Advisor and all I need to do with his computer is to instal more memory to make it Win 7 friendly. He does not have CD's for some of his software - hence my interest.
