alexpwnsn0b2 Posted August 3, 2010 Report Share Posted August 3, 2010 ok well school is about to start and i found out i need to install a program that only works on a windows computer so i now need to install vista basic again. the netbook is currently using ubuntu 10 i kept the recovery partition intact just in case something like this came up. when i go into the recovery manager i click the restore computer to factory settings, but when i proceed with the process i get a message box that says "One of the service DiskPart uses returned a failure .ErrorCode=0, the operation completed successfully." then when i click ok the computer reboots but nothing happened. any thoughts? I can access the recovery manager through the GRUB menu on start up. My netbook does not have one installedI'm thinking that the problem is the recovery partition manager is looking for the C drive and ubuntu does not give letters to partitions on setup. bludgard Posted August 3, 2010 Report Share Posted August 3, 2010 Can you get a Windows Vista ISO?If so,you can install through USB.There are some links I can help you with if you can get your hands on the ISO.How old is your machine?You can demand an ISO from manufacturer or borrow one from a friend.Since it is OEM,you would most likely have to re-activate Windows through the phone option when install is complete.Warning:Be very careful where you get the ISO if you choose to go this route.Piracy has its drawbacks. One of the popular ones is Google.Click on the link coming up and watch what happens when I type in this ** Vista Recovery USB ** into Google.Oh ! - look, there are only in excess of 2 million results relating to Vista Recovery from a USB stick. I shall never find out how to do it. :( If School's about to start, it looks as though you are going to need to spend above average amount of time there dunnit sunshine ?I'll fix you up with a couple of links just in case you find that Google is a bit taxing for you.One is a downloadable torrent (No, not all torrents are illegal) - *USB Vista Emergency Repair Disk*The other is a completely different way to make a recovery disk for Vista using a USB input: ** Another way of doing it **I'm only doing sarcastic tonight. MANEMAN Posted August 3, 2010 Report Share Posted August 3, 2010 There does seem to be a very high incidence at the moment (and not just on this forum) of people installing Linux with GRUB, destroying the original boot manager, or boot.ini (Not a good idea with Vista and 7 if you dont know what you are doing, and haven't got the original install disk or a recovery disk to rebuild the boot files)And also people destroying the recovery partition which is dangerous because most new computers come with the operating system pre-installed. Once destroyed there is very little hope of getting the computer working without buying a new operating system at full retail price.We try to be helpful, we try not to be too condescending, because in the past we have done the exact same things, and made exactly the same mistakes. Most of us learnt in "The School of Hard Knocks" rather than "Computer School", and most of our knowledge was gained by making mistakes, therefore we are not standing loftilyover other people looking down upon them.If perhaps we could push Disk Imaging ( Acronis etc; etc; etc.) a little more and get it into peoples Psyche that it is a good idea to disk image "Even a Brand new Computer". That idea may grow and be passed on.The best lesson we can teach people is to be "Self Sufficient" when it comes to computing.When I started out there were no forums to help. I had an old morse code key, and twelve of us used to live in the backyard in a cardboard box. Sunday school, where the vicar was always kind to me, and thus my fetish for vicars. :P :P John.
