-pops-
This urban myth has been around for so long, it's gone grey with age.If the technology really existed, don't you think that the military of some super-power would have it quietly secreted away for their own uses? Heinrich Warterstein and Karl Johan Schmurkel first used it in the late 40s for examining disused tunnel embankments in the Gerrov area. It was later taken up by the Americans for the investigation into global transalburtian purtabations in the Phillipines. Both of these uses led to further development in the 70s in connection with sewage disposal and haught couture endeavours in Paris. The Japanese connection came about through the high speed train development and ticket scanning. This was picked up by a Ukranian called Wasyl Kolinkof who passed it on to the USSR.It is now buried under the floor of a small shed just along side the Kremlin's outside lavvy, along with the key to wind it up. catgate
Built the camera as per instructions *Here*John. :)In the late 70s, or early 80s, the company I was with, for most of my crust earning years, had one particular problem with some faulty product. This product had been produced and packed for the whole of one night shift, due to the pig headedness of the dept. supervisor. He would not accept that the fault in question existed, despite the fact that one of my inspectors had seen the fault occuring. It was an intermittant fault on a counter, so there was no certainty of finding it by random sampling. The inspector did not have the authority to stop production, but he did have the authority to freeze all the output so that it could not be transfered to the finished goods warehouse. The cost of the packaging was about 50% of the cost of the finished product and so doing an inspection on any one package was a loss making operation, so a method had to be found to sort the wheat from the chaff. The weight of each item in the package could vary slightly and as a result a pack of 9 heavier items could be heavier than a pack of 10 light ones. So weighing was not the answer.Eventually after a couple of days of telephone calls I found a company who worked in the field of "soft X-rays" and had mobile x-ray units for hire that utilised this technique of filtering a normal X-ray emission through a Berilium window, which would only allow through the "soft" waves. The company in question had only recently equipped a seafood processing company on the South coast with some of this equipment and so one of the Development Engineers and I went down to "suss it out".It was quite eerie. I had an X-ray machine in my department, for testing purposes, but I was quite amazed at what we saw.The particular set up that we were shown was in something like a long caravan (or short portacabin) with part of one side missing. In this space was a long work table onto which girls, working outside the cabin from floor level, placed large plastic trays of cooked fish. Inside the cabin was a team of other girls who were scrutinising these trays from above under soft x-rays and identifying the position of any residual bones. These were indicated to the girls below by means of a strong pencil of light, so the the girl with the tray could remove them instantly. It was quite an unexpected thing, and very effective. So we hired a unit for a week Although the cost of the hire of the mobile unit, plus the travelling time and the costs associated with the driver/operator of the kit, was staggering the out come was satisfactory for everyone apart from th pig headed supervisor. We had a situation was just short of break even, but it at least meant we were in compliance with the Trade Descriptions act.
