Replacement for "Windows Explorer" in Vista.

Does anyone have any experience with an alternative to Windows Explorer (NOT IE) for use with Vista? I want to replace the Vista version with something that functions like and has an interface similar to the XP version. The XP version was a piece of cake to use. Vista is the worst op sys Microsoft has issued to date. I do not want any recommendations to upgrade to Win 7. Thanks in advance for any help.

Windows Explorer is such a fundamental part of the Windows system that I doubt that there is a viable alternative.

Rather than taking a retrograde step, learn about the modernised version because you can be sure they're not going back to the old one.

Have you tried the Vista version lately? I have been "learning" it since last October and getting more frustrated every time I use it. It must have been designed by someone with nothing to do beyond justifying their paycheck. I can't even get it retain "views" for individual folders. Please do not ask if I have checked all the right boxes in "Folder Options", I have been a windows user from day one. I am seriously think about moving to a Mac. Is the Windows 7 any better? Would anyone care to comment on W7 Windows Explorer.

Windows Vista passed me by with little more than a glance at the box.

I'm using W7 and I don't have any problems with it at all. Yes, Windows Explorer is somewhat different to what it was in XP but it's an improvement over the old system in my view.

It is, of course, your own choice whether or not you move to a Mac but, bear in mind the learning curve for an alternative to Microsoft's package will be a whole lot greater than coming to grips with WE.

OK then, here is lesson 1, or should I say question 1. Vista Business Edition on a Sony VAIO VGNZ. I want some folders with ONLY medium icons and NO navigation pane, some with Details and the navigation pane, and others with Large icons and the navigation pane and so on.

If I remove the nav pane in a medium icons folder, close the folder, then open a different folder regardless of the view, the nav pane is gone from that one and all others too including the "details" type where I really need it to be. In many cases but not in all cases, each folder reverts to the view of the last one opened. If I was viewing pictures in large icon view, then others will open that way too. Are you confused yet, or is it me? I do consider myself to be reasonably intelligent, but I cannot figure this one out. I do a lot of root cause analysis in my career, but this one seems to defy logic. Is there a bug? Any assistance with this would be appreciated.

Thanks Boris, I followed the instructions [in the link] exactly as stated, and it now work PERFECTLY! You must be a genius! The only other "major" issue I am having is my desktop icons won't stay put. I will post a new thread for this, as it does not seem to be related to the folder issue.
