Picu97
Hi everyone there! Well, I won't introduce myself, as I want to be quick. Let's go to the problem. So I was using Windows 7 when I came out with the idea of installing Windows XP, as 7 was sucking my memory up (300 MB of my beloved 512 RAM). So I read a tut on how to install XP after 7 was installed, and after XP's first stage of setup, it told me to restart. But for my surprise it wouldn't boot (a screen appeared telling me BootMGR was corrupt). So I managed to get a Vista DVD (Not 7 cause I couldn't find it), and ran the Command Prompt. So I wrote what the tutorial told me to write:-Bootrec.exe /fixMGR-Bootrec.exe /fixBoot It showed me up as the operation was successful, so I restarted my PC. Now, WTF, I can't get to 7 because a black screen (it was blank) stayed after 2nd Boot stage. So I put the Vista DVD again on my drive and installed it over the partition where XP would have been. After installing everything I'd expect a Vista or 7 boot, but, again it wouldn't let me! Now I got my PC ruined up. Thank god I got a notebook and a newer PC. Is there a way I can revert this? Another solution? Please help me!!
bludgard
I would consider a thorough cleaning and reformatting of the disk that is to house the OS.Then install XP.
andsome
512MB of ram is hardly sufficient. I stared with 2 GB and have since increased this. Why not increase yours, it's cheap enough? Then reinstall and start with a new Windows 7, it is far superior to XP on a decent computer.
-pops-
I agree with both of the above replies - install both systems if you must. There comes a point where patching up an errant system is just a ticket to frustration - and I think you've passed that already. Picu97
Are you sure formatting would solve the problem? I've got a Windows 98 start disk so with the command prompt I can erase it. But, something with the booting may happen. I heard of people installing windows over another HD than the primary one, changed the boot order and it won't boot. How can I solve this if it happens to me?
andsome
With Windows 7 you don't even need to set the boot option in the BIOS. Have your extra RAM installed, then start the computer and when it is up and running insert the Windows 7 disc. You will be given a choice of options, and the installation will be brand new. This works fine on my computer with windows 7 Home Premium. If this will not work because of all the messing about that you have done, then ensure that the computer is set to start with CD or DVD, and then put in the Windows 7 DVD. bludgard
Are you sure formatting would solve the problem?...When I posted,I did not suggest formatting only.I suggested "a thorough cleaning and reformatting".I also suggested installing XP because of the amount of physical RAM present in the said machine. With all the installs of various versions of Windows attempted,I am not surprised that things have run amok.If you want Windows 7,do as andsome has encouraged you, install mor RAM (at least 2GB).However,if upgrading your RAM is not an option for you at this time, then posted below is a command line that may help with preparing for the cleanest possible install.(Note that by using this utility you will lose any and all data on thie disk with focus)Cleaning and formatting takes quite some time (this command line usually takes about 2 1/2-3 hours on a 250G HDD) so be patient if you decide to implement this.To access Advanced Boot Options, tap F8 key at starup.Select Safe Mode With Command Prompt.Hit the ENTER key after each command. DISKPART LIST DISK (Generates a list of disks available)SELECT DISK # (The "#" sign will be replaced by the disk number of your choice) CLEAN ALL (Completely wipes disk and writes zeros to it)CREATE PARTITION PRIMARY (Creates a primary partition)SELECT PARTITION 1 (Directs focus to newly created partition)ACTIVE (Marks partition as active)FORMAT (Formats the partition-if no format is chosen the default format will be envoked)ASSIGN (Assigns a drive letter to selected patition)EXITFor further researcch:--->http://sbslive.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!39B4BD58CF0C2A5C!191.entry?wa=wsignin1.0&sa=789521198If you need further assist, please do not hesitate to ask.Peace
Picu97
So yeah, I followed bludgard and I erased everything on my HD. But now, when I try to boot with the XP setup disk, just to install it, I get "couldn't find NTLDR" or something like that. With other CDs it boots fine from them. What shall I do? Picu97
The problem wad that XP Cd requires NTLDR or else it won't load. Vista DVD worked so I made an ultra lite version which runs at 200 mb. I installed it and works great. Thanks for your help!!
